GPS caddy for Samsung Galaxy S3 and usb/battery charging tails - simonm - 17-02-13 Hoping to use my SGS3 as a satnav for the bike and wondered if anyone had recommendations for a handlebar based waterproof case ? Also want to keep it charged so any ideas on the best way to pull a detachable 5v microUSB power feed which runs off the ignition.... Also wouldn't mind being able to trickle charge the battery without lifting the seat, has anyone heard of some waterproof battery charging tails which can be discretely hidden ? cheers Simon Re: GPS caddy for Samsung Galaxy S3 and usb/battery charging tails - unfazed - 17-02-13 See this link, http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Motorcycle-Fork-Stem-Mount-Din-Charger-Waterproof-Case-Samsung-Galaxy-S3-/170941500867 Re: GPS caddy for Samsung Galaxy S3 and usb/battery charging tails - simonm - 20-02-13 This link looks interesting: http://cbrforum.com/forum/how-mechanical-40/how-install-charging-usb-port-your-bike-zomg-96467/ I suspect it might be better to grab a cigarette lighter style usb plug and grab the innards out of it and wire it to the ignition with a waterproof in-line switch. I think the problem with the 7805 regulator is wasting 7V of energy through heat. Given the power of a motorcycle battery with an alarm and heated grips on it and I think that is a bad thing. http://www.instructables.com/answers/How-can-I-convert-12v-down-to-5v/ Re: GPS caddy for Samsung Galaxy S3 and usb/battery charging tails - DryRob - 20-02-13 I was thinking of running a USB extension cable under my petrol tank from a cig lighter socket so I could just unplug it when I don't need it rather than messing about splicing into the ignition. I'm concerned about the cable melting and catching fire though so I might follow the frame around the bottom of tank instead. My plan was that it would be fused, the usb connector would be hidden in a more water resistant area and would also have a waterproof intsert (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003LU6A8M/ref=oss_product?tag=vig-21) and would also have an inline waterproof switch (via ignition) to turn it on and off as well. A cig lighter socket is definitely not waterproof and wouldn't change the likelihood of cable melting anyway (it's the ampage of the wire and the load that you're pulling and/or quality of cabling/grounding/sparks) Re: GPS caddy for Samsung Galaxy S3 and usb/battery charging tails - simonm - 20-02-13 Or these even http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Black-Silicon-Anti-Dust-Plug-Cover-Stopper-for-MacBook-Pro-Air-Notebook-K-/170888243964?pt=UK_Computing_Other_Computing_Networking&hash=item27c9bbaafc Re: GPS caddy for Samsung Galaxy S3 and usb/battery charging tails - Buzz - 20-02-13 I've got a 12V cig lighter into which plugs the 5V adapter sitting in the storage space under the seat, it's hooked up to the ignition circuit with a 5A fuse tap. From this I've got a 2m m/f USB cable going up under the tank which then comes out behind the clocks. My sat nav/jailbroken iPhone plugs into this and it's worked perfectly for the past 9/10 months, when I'm not using the iPhone I poke the cable back behind the clocks and haven't had any water issues yet, probably cost about £6 in total. I'll try and post some pics later on. I was going to route it like Buzz has and use the fairing to keep it dry Re: GPS caddy for Samsung Galaxy S3 and usb/battery charging tails - Buzz - 20-02-13 (20-02-13, 12:24 PM)DryRob link Wrote: I was more concerned about heat from the engine melting the cable than the current I was worried about the same so I tried to use the existing cable clips where available. There's a bit of sag in places bit it's well away from any hot bits. Re: GPS caddy for Samsung Galaxy S3 and usb/battery charging tails - simonm - 23-02-13 I decided to skimp (since I'm spending far too much money on the bike at the moment) and bought one of these. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230854332768?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 I'll let you know if it's much cop.
