Oil change help! ASAP - xlewisbdx - 02-02-13

Drained my oil and took the filter off. Put a new one on and put te drain bolt back along with a new crush washer. Filling the oil back up I have added 2.5litres started the bike and let it run for a few seconds. Added some more cause I couldn't see the oil mark on the window. So now I have 2.7 litres in and I still can't see the oil in the window. Wondering what your suggestion are as I got told it takes 2.7 litres with a oil change and oil filter change. Yes the bike in on the centre stand on a level surface

Going Walsall from Manchester in an hour. :/

Re: Oil change help! ASAP - xlewisbdx - 02-02-13

The oil in the window is just below the full mark. Should I leave it there or add a bit more?

Re: Oil change help! ASAP - Lawrence - 02-02-13

I wouldn't be interested in the actual quantity. The manual and standard procedure is to fill it until you see it in the window between the two level points. That is the only thing I would go by so I'd suggest that you do it as soon as you can. Even though the manual states that it is 2.7ltr with a filter change, it also states under that "Total amount 3.5ltr".

I did quite clearly say put enough oil in to go between the upper and lower markings, so why would you want to put more in?

Re: Oil change help! ASAP - unfazed - 02-02-13

For your infomation and to avoid confusion of all the different oil amounts
Total oil for a completly dry engine is 3.5 L
Without oil filter replacement it is 2.5 L
With oil filter replacement it is 2.7 L
When filling keep the level as close to the top marks as possible as this prevents intermittent flashing of the oil level light with a cold engine.
I have a friend who rang me with a similar problem of filling up the oil but was not showing in the oil sight glass, turned out he had miscalculated the amount and had put in an extra litre. When he was checking the oil sight glass it appeared to be clear but he was looking at was an oil sight glass with fresh clean oil not an empty sight glass as he thought,

What confusion?
This is what i wrote, i couldn't have been any clearer?  :wall

"....From empty, as you are changing the filter as well, you're safe to put in 2.5 litres straight off. Then, start the engine for 20-30 seconds so it coats the engine, switch off, and then watch the window, the oil will slowly rise up.If it's not enough add a bit at a time, then start engine again, switch off, then watch the window again.Repeat this process until the oil level is in between the metal markers at the side of the window.Make sure the bike's on a level flat surface on the centre stand though otherwise you'll get a false reading.    If you're thinking of changing the oil around the 4000 mile mark, you only need to replace the filter every 2 changes, it's not necessary every time...."

Isn't this the 3rd topic that has been created on this subject by OP in the past month?

Re: Oil change help! ASAP - richfzs - 02-02-13

Not sure about 3rd, but maybe I missed one

1) Asking how to do it
2) This one, saying I've focced it up  :rollin

Re: Oil change help! ASAP - Dead Eye - 02-02-13

There was one before christmas asking what Oil and filter to buy as well Tongue

Re: Oil change help! ASAP - darrsi - 02-02-13

Mind you, it's not as bad as the four litres of oil i pulled out of my bike when i bought it.

I'm almost grateful the fella didn't buy a 5 litre can, i'm sure he would've squeezed every last drop out of it.  :groan

Why do you  assume you are the one being corrected. If you read through the posts, :deal there were questions about different oil amounts and now they have beeen put right.

I stated the oil levels twice, then Lazarus posted the same as you, there's an online manual as well, and for good measure it even says 2.5 litres on the engine casing, so what i'm saying is how on this earth can there be any confusion?  :groan
One thing i will say though is people should stop mentioning 3.5 litres 'cos it's unnecesary.

Re: Oil change help! ASAP - Dead Eye - 02-02-13

Unless you are filling the engine from dry, which I will likely be doing next week Tongue

You know, just to throw a spanner in the conversation  :angel

Re: Oil change help! ASAP - darrsi - 02-02-13

Yeah, cheers for that deadeye  :lol

I can't believe there's so much discussion about pouring liquid into a hole!
If it was beer i was talking about, everyone would get it straight away.
Fill up to the level of the pint glass, too much and you'll spill it, not enough and you've been short changed.  :lol
