Fazer 600S starting itself when ignition on! ** Fixed ** - sharpypaul - 01-02-13

Fazer 600S, 1998 (T plate)

Had a weird one today! Bike started fine but about a mile into my journey my oil and petrol lights came on despite not being low. I killed the engine and checked the oil and it was fine. On putting the switch to 'run' the bike started! There was also a buzzing noise coming from the right hand side casing, almost as though the starter motor is constantly on.

After work I took the starter switch apart but it's fine. The bike tried to start but the battery is rubbish. The relay by the battery was buzzing like nobody's business though. The oil and petrol lights were both still on. Bump started the bike and limped home (felt as though it wasn't firing properly on all cylinders). The buzzing noise was still coming from the right hand casing. Turned her off at home and back on again and she isn't trying to start herself which is a plus although the battery wouldn't kick over the starter, didn't even make an attempt.

Anyone got any ideas? I'm going to fully charge the battery and then check all connections and spray with WD40. I'm beginning to suspect the ignition switch might be the culprit. The odd thing is that I've never had any trouble with the bike until now and she started fine!

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I had slightly the same prob once, I mean slight lol
When my starter button wasn't working I started the bike by connecting a wire from the blue and white wire in the starter relay to the pillion peg for an earth to run the starter, but once the wire got stuck and the starter kept running and while its running the oil light will stay on and the fuel light and the fan will keep running( u might not have heard it while riding?)
Maybe give Ur starter relay a check? Some corrosion could have made a connection between the wire and earth on the earth wire or to the frame, also in the wire connector box under the tank, the connectors can corrode in there aswel, I have serious connector corrosion on my 99

That's just somewhere to start I gues if u have checked the button for corrosion

Also maybe check the spring on the starter button? If its not releasing enuf it will keep the connection crossed

I second Padraig. I'd check your starter relay or maybe replace it as they are cheap enough. I'm only speculating, but it sounds to me if it's becoming stuck at times and not disengaging. So I reckon it keeps your starter motor disengaging.

That in turn would knacker your battery, I'd imagine. There is a savage draw in spinning the starter motor as you know. If you have a bike that didn't start due to carb problems or plug problems, the battery would spin the starting motor for only about 15-20 mins before it gets depleted. So imagine what it is doing to your battery having the starting motor spinning all the time. The reason it's not dying completly on you, is that the bike is actually going and is still charging the battery. But I suspect at a rate that is not keeping up with the output so the battery is running down and eventually will drain completly. I'd concentrate there before the "kill" switch and ignition.

As for "it was running fine all along".........sh!t have to happen at some stage. The bike is over 10 years old and things will start to go eventually.

Best of luck with it!

Cheers for the advice guys, it's a good place to start  Big Grin  Definitely not the starter switch, I'll let you know how I get on!

I have a feeling it could be a busy (and hopefully not frustrating) weekend!!!

Yep, definitely the starter relay! Checked all the connections and they were fine, not corroded at all. As soon as I turned the ignition on it started vibrating like a mad thing and wouldn't stop until I turned the ignition off!

Ebay here I come!!!

**Update**

Well new relay received and fitted and still the same thing  :'(  I think when the weather improves I'll have to check the lead to the starter and also the one under the tank in case an earth lead has become corroded/detached. Failing that she's booked in for a service on the 14th March when the experts can look at her! It's a good job the weather is rubbish at the moment!!!

jeez....thats a balls! Sounded like the relay. Hope u get sorted soon.

Confused.com! Had a good investigation today but still non the wiser! Everything still points to the relay even though it has been changed...

Latest update:
As the bike kept starting I took the starter motor out of the equation so at least I could hear myself think! The first thing I noticed was the petrol and oil lights were still on. Flicking the kill switch you can hear the relay click. However pressing the starter button doesn't make a noise on the relay. Took the switch to bits but nothing untoward there. In fact when you press it you can see the dash lights dim so it is making a contact. This points back to the relay. I'm sure I can't be unlucky and have 2 knackered relays? I suspect there must a dodgy connection somewhere. Unfortunately it isn't possible to take the relay out of the equation and still have the ignition on. Everything seems to run through the relay.

Anyone got any other ideas? If all else fails it's got a service on the 15th March so they can sort it out!!!

Unplug the wiring to the relay coil and check to see if you have 12v.  If you have go to the next joint, unplug and test again.  By process of elimination you'll soon find the problem.

If no 12v on the relay the set your voltmeter to do a circuit check and test the relay to make sure the contacts are open correctly when the relay is not energised.

This way you can check if you have a good relay or not.

Well after getting nowhere and knowing she was booked in for a service I left it to the garage to sort out! The problem was caused by the alarm of all things! A wire was shorting! So with the service, electrics fixed and new x-ring chain and sprockets my wallet was £536 lighter but I got my baby back and she rides like a dream  Big Grin

Thanks to everyone for the advice, I'm just glad it's all sorted especially with the weather finally improving!

That's great, glad you got it sorted and put up what solved it  8)

Shame it cost you a bit but glad you can get out on it without worrying now  Smile

Alarms are handy things but they don't half seem to cause some issues.

Blighters are a pain to bypass too for obvious reasons  :lol

I'm glad it's fixed and it's a shame it cost so much.  Time to make it back with interest through enjoyment  :lol
