Exhaust Header Refurbishment - Topcat2006 - 06-01-13

Managed to get the exhaust header off today without shearing any studs off!  4 came out still attached to the nuts so have ordered 4 new studs to put in and I think I may order some brass nuts to replace the mild steel nuts.

The header appears to be stainless which has been plated?  But it looks as though it is cheap stainless and the plating is breaking down.

What have people done to give these a new lease of life?  Wire wool to get back to the stainless and polish it?  Exhaust paint?

Thanks

Tom

I doubt brass will take the torque required.
I use these, the dome helps keep road salt from attacking the stud and being stainless they shouldn't turn to crap like the original nuts.

autosol

get a foot one inch wide rag and cover in autosol the thresd through header tube overlap and pul backwards and forwards cleans em up a treat

Better get some autosol then!

Fazer idler - that was my concern too - I've got some of those dome nuts in my toolbox so will be putting them back on with those.

Thanks

i hit mine with wet'n'dry then course compound then a fine compound (as these were to hand in the garage anyway) and they came up like brand new. i then masked off the collector, wire wooled it and sprayed it with simoniz aluminium engine paint and it's lasted really well.

when any tar or the like lands on them now i clean it off with meguiars metal polish.

wonder wheels brings up headers a treat...brush on and wash off....I like the idea of painting the collector box... Smile

Re: Exhaust Header Refurbishment - JayB - 07-01-13

I used some car type abrasive sponges I had left over from spraying a mudguard and just used the remains of a bucket of normal wash and wax used for bodywork.

Rougher sponge then worked down to the smoothest one. Came up a treat, and they really were shit.!

This may not work for everyone, when I used ww it made the headers worse.

Re: Exhaust Header Refurbishment - Topcat2006 - 08-01-13

Thanks for the suggestions.  Looking further at the exhaust I would say it is plated and the plating is coming off in places cause in these aces its gone rusty.....

Going to give it a good clean and see what it looks like after.

MY Headers where bad after last winter, used this http://www.hein-gericke.co.uk/hein-gericke-optiglanz-edelstahlreiniger-250-ml.html?gclid=CPasgfTr3bQCFYq7zAodLRYA7A and some AutoGlymn and they came up like new. Took about 15 mins to do whole header. Would remomend. Also doubles up as Drive Cleaner!  :lol  Its ACID.

Note to Lord Jon and others .. on Painting the Exup Cast Iron Collector Box.

On all three of my Gen 1s I used pure Olive Oil to 'paint' the cast iron box. Give it several coats for a good result.  I've no idea why .. but pure veg oil seems to 'burn' on and forms a black 'jacket' over the cast metal .. no rust, no salt .. just a nice 'black box' that shows off the pipes really well.

It might smoke a bit for a few minutes when you bump up the lump .. but I ha no damage or problems at all. :\

Worth a try maybe ?  8)    Stay Safe.  Trev
