Supsected Coil pack / Poor running and no acceleration ! - Superted87 - 08-11-12 Hi guys, first post on here so be gentle! I have a 2002 Fazer 600 in a rather fetching shade of gold and black! (vomit i call it) IT had been stood in the dry for 2 years and when i bought her i changed the fuel, Oil, filter, battery, chain, sprockets and generally cleaned up and repainted everything that i could. She fires up but runs rough as a badger. I have been doing some fault finding and have found that removing HT leads 1 or 4 has no effect on the running. If i remove 2 or 3 the engine dies. This is indicating to me that 1 and 4 are not great and in turn is saying coil pack to me. As a Bike novice i do not know much about the TPS however my suspicions are in this area because when i try to rev the engine it just dies! If anyone could point me in the right direction i would be very grateful. Many thanks Ted Re: Supsected Coil pack / Poor running and no acceleration ! - bigsteve - 08-11-12 Hi Being stood for so long my guess would be blocked jets in carbs Had similiar problem with rough idling I removed spark plug cap on number 3 and no change to engine running removed any others engine died turned out to be blocked idle jet Re: Supsected Coil pack / Poor running and no acceleration ! - Superted87 - 08-11-12 ok , so what does this mean for me then, monday night in the garage removing the carbs?? im assuming they will be a bugger to get off? do i just get them out and then clean them up with some fuel or brake cleaner?? anything i should know before i do this??? Re: Supsected Coil pack / Poor running and no acceleration ! - bigsteve - 08-11-12 Hi Isnt to bad a job to remove carbs I flowed instructions in Haynes manual I just removed jets and cleaned them with a carb cleaning fluid and thin piece of wire only thing I didnt remove was mixture screw but before doing that try swapping spark plugs and maybe swapping coils of just to iliminate them Re: Supsected Coil pack / Poor running and no acceleration ! - His Dudeness - 09-11-12 i'd pull the plugs and see if they are sparking first. their condition would also give a good indication of what's happening. be careful not to shock yourself and test for spark well away from where the spark plugs screw in or you could ignite any petrol vapour in the air Re: Supsected Coil pack / Poor running and no acceleration ! - unfazed - 09-11-12 A coil fault is rare enough on the fazer as it is usually loose plug caps which are the cause of the problem. Do as his dudeness says and test for spark first, 1 & 4 are fired by one coil and 2 and 3 are fired by the second coil. It works on the wasted spark principle, both plugs fire at the same time but one cylinder is on the exhause stroke when the other is on compression. If you have spark at 1 & 4 then it is most likely blocked carburettor jets from fuel evaporation. Lift the tank and check the connection on the coils also, I have come accross a few loose ones. Make sure when checking for spark that both plugs are earthed to the cylinder head. Tape them to the head if necessary to keep them in position but do not hold them with you hand, it can be a shocking experience :rollin Re: Supsected Coil pack / Poor running and no acceleration ! - Superted87 - 11-11-12 so gents, monday night is the night, either the carbs are coming off or the coil will be hung drawn and quartered! thanks for all of the help and ill update tomorrow night ! cheers Re: Supsected Coil pack / Poor running and no acceleration ! - Superted87 - 13-11-12 Right then, i got my carbs off last night, had a look inside and they were all except one completely furred up with green crap. Awful ! So i cleaned them up with some petrol and left the jets etc to soak. All of the small little machine gun looking ones had no hole through so im assuming, there will be no throughput at all! I will clean all of them up and then refit and check it over. Tonight i will be re assembling the bits and hopefully firing it all up and riding off in to the sunset! wish me luck Re: Supsected Coil pack / Poor running and no acceleration ! - Superted87 - 15-11-12 Woooohooooo!!!! i cleaned out all of the carb jets, removed all of the green crap from the float bowls, pushed the small jets through with a fine sewing needle and she fired up a treat!!!!!! smooth acceleration, smooth torquey pull away in 1st and she sounds like a dream!! i havent ridden in ages so my mate jumped on and gave her a ride up the road and said it was lovely to ride! Happy bunny! Many thanks to all who offered assistance, i will be enjoying my fazer to the full from now on!
