Fazer 1000 Advice - Bloy182 - 08-11-12

Hi


Im new to this forum, i currently own an Aprilia Pegaso Strada 650 3k miles, 2008, and I have been offered a 2004 fazer 1000 13k miles straight swap.


I did own a hornet 900 previous to the Pegaso, i really miss having a bigger bike but wanted some advice if you think this seems like a good deal?

I also use my bike throughout winter, do many of you use your fazer 1000 all year round?

It has done 13k miles 1 previous owner, im meeting up with him sunday.  it has 12 months mot on it, its described as excellent condition but ill see about that,


are they the sort of bike you can use all year round?

Yep, you can use the Fazer all year round but like any bike that is used over winter you will need to  wash the salty crud off of it and preferably dry it before putting it away. Oh and a decent coating of AC50 (I think thats the stuff) or similar to repel crud would be a good idea.
They are great bikes, if you go for it you will enjoy it, esp in the summer with nice warm tyres Smile

i think everyone on here will say swap it !.  Rode the winter on a honda domi a while back (similar to the prilla) and it was great on the slippy shitty winter roads, coated it with acf50 and never washed it till I sold it a few months later, damn thing came up like new ! Tough one really as they're so different, but no reason why you cant use a fazer all year. Bike prices seem to be all over the place atm....me I'd have both  :lol

above is my Pegaso (2008, 3258 miles, fsh, showroom con), and of course the fazer im looking at (2004, 13,000miles)

If you're after a bigger bike, you won't go far wrong with the Fazer, and I have no problems using mine all year round. Milage seems good, and values are about right, so if you have a ride and like it, go for it!
P.S. As has been said elsewhere, make sure the tyres are good when you ride it, the tyre condition seems to make a big difference to the Fazer!

No contest , take the fazer and run. A truly excellent all rounder.
My son rode his all through the year in snow and ice and everthing the M25 could throw at him while he was working and living near London for 2 years. The only thing we did to it was raise the forks through the yolks 10mm. to sharpen the handling.  It is in my garage at the moment for a service.

Dont know the "value" of your current bike BUT there was an identical standard blue FZS 1000 on "05" plate in my local dealer yesterday with 28000 miles asking price £3995. Dont think they will sell it @ this price as I have seen better bikes for less on this forum & ebay etc. Fazer is a remarkably good all rounder :lol -just clean properly & apply ACF 50 before winter riding.

brakes dont like salt..wash down with cold water after every ride if roads are wet and salt laden.. check once a month that pistons move if your doing loads of miles

It looks like it still has the original shock, you will likely want to replace it sooner than later as this is a definate weak point,  have a look at the R6 shock thread for a reasonably priced alternative to an after market unit. I would also advise asking the owner about his regime for maintaining the exhaust valve, if he can answer to your satisfaction and even better show you that the cover plate is easily removed then you are probably looking at a bike that has been well looked after by a knowledgable owner, if he scratches his head then I'd be a bit more cautious. what you suspect if clocked the mileage back? it has had 2 previous owners that didnt use it, the condition of the bike reflects the miles without having to explain why its only covered 3k miles in 5 years

I was just about the say the same thing in regards his Pegaso. The 2003 with ist 13k on the clock is worth about £2000-2500 if its in vgood cond and there and NO mechanical gremlins.

And yeah that 2005 w/28k isnt worth £4k, more like £3k.

Did you end up with the fazer? Just about right as a swap wouldnt be putting any money towards it. Definately budget for a back shock since the stock one was crap when new and bound to be toast by now. Devilsyam is the man for an R6 shock upgrade money well spent.

A dealer will only offer you £2000 to £2250 for the Fazer against a new bike.........I know I've been around several dealers with mine.  Wink

Its  always easier if you havent got a bike to trade-in/sell first. But a straight swap may be the answer if theres only limited demand for the Pegaso. Think that the Fazer worth a look BUT as said look for evidence of proper maintenance of EXUP valve-it gets overlooked & isnt part of any routine service schedule. If the bikes on original brake hoses consider cost of replacing with braided (c£75?) as like rear shock will be well past their best. How about tyres,brake pads? But well cared for/maintained the Fazer will do whatever you want it to :lol

I hadn't though of clocking. What I was thinking was that a bike with 3k miles on it that is more then six months old is a bike that doesn't get ridden. And that suggests that the owner doesn't like riding it, either because it is not nice to ride or because they don't like riding. In either case, a Fazer does not strike me as a good replacement.
