Fuel Gauge Accuracy - Skippernick - 13-10-12 Ran the bike on the low fuel light for about 10 miles today and then filled up expecting to put a lot in, but only squeezed in 19 litres. Which suggests 3 litres left which given i had ridden 275 miles meant i had another 50 odd miles which means i was getting well over 300 miles to a tank. Is the fuel gauge that inaccurate? What do you think? Nick Re: Fuel Gauge Accuracy - Major Rant - 13-10-12 You sure your 'miles' aren't kilometers? ![]() To get 300 miles out of a tank you'd have to lend it to Mother Theresa on a 30MPH mercy dash! 200 - 210 is more normal. Re: Fuel Gauge Accuracy - Skippernick - 13-10-12 Well i've assumed its in miles i mean i'm the second owner and i bought it from the local Yamaha dealer who sold it originally. So it's not an import. And the trip concurs with my IAM observers trip. So..... now i'm at a loss. Re: Fuel Gauge Accuracy - Major Rant - 13-10-12 What does it say on the "model number" label under the seat ? I think there's a sticker on the metal bar that sits behind the battery. Have a look in here ... http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,34.msg66.html#msg66 Mine says 5DM-060 and its French! Re: Fuel Gauge Accuracy - NotAnotherHill - 13-10-12 My light comes on at about 180 miles. I filled up at 210 miles and got 17.15 litres in. My fuel consumption varies between 53 and 55 normally on a run. If I take it really steady, I can get more but I have to be riding like a nun. Re: Fuel Gauge Accuracy - limax2 - 13-10-12 Some interesting points here. Although the tank may hold 22 litres, if it is like my 2001 model, there is about 1.5 litres at the bottom that won't come out. So I dought you would have got another 50 miles on it. Your 275 miles on 19 ltrs is about 65.79 m.p.g.. This is possible on a steady run if you limit the speed to about 60 m.p.h. and with gentle acceleration, just like the nun. With normal fairly sensible riding I get 60 m.p.g. (If you had been recording Km instead of miles you would be getting about 41 m.p.g., I don't think that is the case). It will be interesting to see what you get next time you fill up. As for the fuel gauge, it is not what you would call accurate, but does give a fairly consistant guide. You may have noticed that when you are going up a hill it will show different to when going down hill. Mine is a 2001 model, but with 15 litres in the tank the gauge is off the top of the scale, so I do about 60 miles after filling up before the gauge starts to move. I have always found the mile-ometer on mine pretty much matches what the sat-nav predicts for a trip, so I would say it is accurate. Re: Fuel Gauge Accuracy - Skippernick - 13-10-12 Limax that ties in with the fact that when i fill up my gauge reads well over full. Exactly the same as you. I'm doing my IAM so not hanging round, 3rd gear in 30 etc. I don't thrash it though but i'm not a nun either. Might start working out my mpg properly now. Re: Fuel Gauge Accuracy - xlewisbdx - 13-10-12 I have a 98 model, I normally stick about £20 to fill the tank (14 liters) and get about 150-170 miles. Then the light comes on and I fill up again then. http://www.fuelly.com/driver/xxlewisbdxx/fz600 Re: Fuel Gauge Accuracy - NotAnotherHill - 14-10-12 Skipper nick, why not sign up and use Fuelly. It will give you a very accurate record of your mpg. Re: Fuel Gauge Accuracy - Skippernick - 14-10-12 Just done it on your advice. Re: Fuel Gauge Accuracy - Fazerider - 14-10-12 Just went on Fuelly to record this morning's fill-up and spotted your nickname in the "Recent Fuel-ups" column. FWIW my average is about 55mpg and find the range after the fuel warning light comes on to be around 50 miles... managed to squeeze 20 litres in this time though, so doubt it would have got me much further. :lol Re: Fuel Gauge Accuracy - Skippernick - 29-10-12 Well to keep you up to date. Filled in my second Fuelly today so got my first MPG..... 57.7 mpg. So i was about right. That was mostly used on a ride out last weekend with my local IAM group, mainly main road riding not much city work. So there it is. Nick Re: Fuel Gauge Accuracy - Lawrence - 31-10-12 I normally put about 9.5 litres in every day. Gauge reads 3/4 full at this point... mine has the 20 litre tank being a 2001. I think the light is fairly accurate though. Re: Fuel Gauge Accuracy - popeye72 - 31-10-12 i have regularley managed over 275 on a tank, but i do fill it right up however if i feel like playing this can go down to 180 ![]() Re: Fuel Gauge Accuracy - caretaker - 31-10-12 most journeys i set off with good intentions(60mph), but within 10 miles or so, i just speed up(80+). so i dont bother checking anymore. light comes on, i fill up. simple really! Re: Fuel Gauge Accuracy - limax2 - 31-10-12 I always put £15 worth in, that way the rising cost of fuel doesn't effect me :rolleyes . |
