engine cutting out... - justy1 - 05-10-12 gen1 52 plate 29000 miles on clock.... couple of things..... the engine keeps cutting out! it only use to happen when i was over taking now it dose it while im doing low speed & while im waiting at lights/junctions! the bike also feels like its being pulled back like its hesitating (if that makes any sense?) it also struggles starting when its on the side stand. i have to sit on the bike & sit it up straight for it to start. any ideas on what it maybe? justy1000 Re: engine cutting out... - Dave48 - 05-10-12 Whats the service history? 1. Check electrics.....Side stand switch?/Kill Switch?. Affected by damp conditions? -Spray electrical contact cleaner inside switches followed by ACF50 or similar. HT leads/Caps/Coils? 2. Fuel supply: Tank breather tube, Fuel pump & fuel filter, fuel hoses.? Re: engine cutting out... - steeeve66 - 05-10-12 are all the cylinders firing? might the 'hesitating' you describe be one (or more) not firing? I had something similar, cylinder 1 stopped firing - turned out to be the carbs needed cleaning - also fitted new spark plugs. Has run fine since. Re: engine cutting out... - Dave48 - 05-10-12 Meant to add spark plugs-when last changed? thats why I mentioned service history. Do you have an immobiliser fitted?-some like mine had them fitted from new & they dont last forever!. If you approach things in a methodical way its simply a matter of checking/eliminating possible causes but its going to be either fuel system or ignition. Good luck Re: engine cutting out... - MEM62 - 05-10-12 Air filter, fuel filter and spark plugs would be the first things I would check. Following that make sure that the breather in your petrol cap is clear so you are not creating a vacuum in the tank as the fuel drains. Re: engine cutting out... - justy1 - 05-10-12 cheers...... had a service & a safety check done about 2 months ago (they had the bike all day). new plugs, oil, new blake oil. no air filter as its been full monty'd so just cleeaned. the mechnic said everything was fine. the bike was doing this before the service & the mechnic told me to replace the throttle sensor. which i did at the cost of £166! & the problem still there....... justy1000 Re: engine cutting out... - devilsyam - 05-10-12 Tilt sensor? Re: engine cutting out... - garysimmo - 05-10-12 i agree with devilsyam all pointing to tilt sensor Re: engine cutting out... - Falcon 269 - 05-10-12 The poor starting on sidestand might be a red herring, not connected with the main problem. Take a good look at the contacts in the large white electrical connector block taking voltage from the alternator via the reg/rec to the battery. Also check your battery contacts and the battery voltage. Re: engine cutting out... - sadlonelygit - 05-10-12 under the tank is a mass of connectors in a black sheath, when fiddling around last year i was left with a red wire with a very green furry end (main feed to ignition) not actually connected to anything. sounds like a time+patience job to me. Now what is Blake oil??.??. :rollin Re: engine cutting out... - justy1 - 07-10-12 blake oil....... japanese for brake oil init! god, dont you know nothing! gone for the easy option as i dont own a volt meter. so i checked & cleaned all contacts, relays, side stand, kill switch & tilt switch. not looked at carbs as im not that confident in taking engine bits off/apart....... thanks for all the suggestions. justy1000 Re: engine cutting out... - justy1 - 08-10-12 well it seems like what i did didnt work! engine cut out on the way to work this morning! justy1000 Re: engine cutting out... - Phil TK - 08-10-12 My moneys on the sidestand not retracting fully because of crud and/or the sidestand cut out switch getting sticky. Give the switch and the sidestand pivot a good clean and a spray with wd40. A two minute job that could well fix it. Mine did the same last winter Re: engine cutting out... - Falcon 269 - 08-10-12 You've had this problem for a while, IIRC, Justy. Did you eliminate problems with the ignition switch and plug leads like was suggested on the other Fazer forum? Re: engine cutting out... - justy1 - 10-10-12 (08-10-12, 05:32 PM)Falcon 269 link Wrote: You've had this problem for a while, IIRC, Justy. Did you eliminate problems with the ignition switch and plug leads like was suggested on the other Fazer forum? yes mike. its about 5 or 6 months now. had the kill switch apart today, all looks good. gave that a squirt, plug leads seem tightly on. side stand switch all cleaned & squirted & gone through all the block connectors, none loose & no loose wires under tank. as for tilt switch, the mechanic did suggest it maybe that. looked in the haynes, it says its a sealed unit & the only way of testing it is by taking a volt reading, which i cant do. justy1000 Re: engine cutting out... - tomlinscote - 10-10-12 If you cannot test the tilt switch unit maybe there is a way you can bypass it so the bike thinks the switch is always upright?? P Re: engine cutting out... - Falcon 269 - 10-10-12 What I meant with the plug leads was to unscrew the caps, trim 1/2" off the lead to get back to good core material, and then refit the cap to the lead. |
