Jittery at low revs - FIXED - darrsi - 24-09-12
Thought i'd let you know that my 'jittery' problem at low revs has been sorted this morning.
I'd changed spark plug caps, gapped the plugs and put a K&N filter on the bike, which in my personal opinion improved it a lot at first then it went back to being jerky again in any gear, just as i put a little throttle on.
So i had the bike into PDQ this morning and it went straight onto the rolling road for a Dyno test.
I actually watched the test and was shown that there wasn't too much of a difference on the graph comparison from the last time i had it done when i had a carb overhaul?
The thing is that immediately after 3000rpm it takes off without even a hint of a splutter so it was traffic that was an issue for me, and unfortunately most of my ride to and from work is in traffic so it was important to me that it was working properly.
After being advised that another carb strip down would 'probably' be a waste of time, i opted just for the carb balance for now to see if that would help?
And that was it, he found that the carbs were well out of balance! I'm not sure why they were so far out, because they haven't been touched at all, but as soon as i pulled away from the yard i could feel and hear the difference straight away. Happy days!
[size=1em]One thing that i will mention though which took me a bit by surprise, is that he told me that K&N filters hardly make any difference to the Fazer 600's at all compared to a stock paper filter, whereas a bike like a Suzuki Bandit for instance would have a very noticeable difference! Even more so when people clean them and oil them wrongly and then they don't work as they should.[/size]
[size=1em]Seeing as my bike was showing 85bhp on the Dyno last time it was there and now it was showing about 84.5bhp, then maybe it's true, even though it feels like it can breathe a lot better to me?[/size]
[size=1em]Anyway, i've got 50,000 miles of air filter left to worry about that, so for now i'll just enjoy it as it is! [/size]

Ha ha, there's always something that crops up, especially as we get closer to winter.
I just like things to work as they should though, i'm a bit of a fussy sod! :lol

Yeah, it's a bit of a relief, even better that i was expecting a minimum 3hrs labour and it was only 1hr

I'm not being funny, but i've noticed you're nearer to PDQ than i am, and with all due respect why not give the bike a go on the Dyno and pinpoint what the problem is?
Just a thought.......please don't think i'm trying to undermine you at all, or sound rude, i just want to see your bike up and running, like everyone else does!!!

Did you get a print out from the dyno sessions?
I'd be really interested in seeing the power curves and how any changes would have affected them.

I didn't get one this time, but i did see the what the bike was doing on the Dyno compared to my last visit, and there wasn't a lot in it to be honest. It'd dropped 0.5bhp in 2 years due to wear and tear, which engines tend to do as they get older anyway.
I have a print of the last time i was there though, i'll dig it out and see if i can get a good photo of it to show you.

[size=78%]......iam open to all possible solutions and thank you for your input[/size] [size=78%]....a rolling road session would probs spot the problem but i do like to do the work myself......funny old git i know......carb swop this weekend and a few other checks and see what happens[/size] i`ve heard PDQ mentioned a few times on here but dont know where they are

PDQ are in Taplow, a few minutes around the corner off junction 7 of the M4, in between Slough/Maidenhead.

Well it may not make an improvement, but at least it has a 1 million mile warranty and you only have to clean it every 50k miles

The K&N will be the last filter you ever need to buy for the bike, so economically it makes perfect sense!
