Scooter issues - green_rider - 22-09-12

My sister decided to leave her scooter for long enough that it now wont start. I've so far drained and refilled the carb (which looksclean), replaced the spark plug, checked for a spark, fully charged the battery. Had the cover off the air intake, and even used some easy start spray. At this point I'm not sure what else to check! Any suggestions?

Re: Scooter issues - His Dudeness - 22-09-12

is it a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke? how long was it parked up for?

Re: Scooter issues - ade the blade - 22-09-12

does it have a `kill` switch? Wink

Re: Scooter issues - green_rider - 22-09-12

Its a 4 stroke. Ade I did think that after trying to electric and kick start it but no go, kill switch is set to run.

Re: Scooter issues - ade the blade - 22-09-12

you say you`ve drained / refilled carb, so have you renewed all fuel in the tank ?

Re: Scooter issues - green_rider - 22-09-12

Yep replaced the fuel with fresh initially. Its been in there for about a week and a half.

Re: Scooter issues - His Dudeness - 22-09-12

was it running when it was parked up? if you have another battery that you know is definitely good stick that in and try and start it.

Re: Scooter issues - green_rider - 22-09-12

I went the whole hog and connected it to the car battery, but no luck

Re: Scooter issues - His Dudeness - 22-09-12

and it was running before it was parked?

Re: Scooter issues - green_rider - 22-09-12

Yes was running ok but may have been sat on and off in-between.  Getting meaningful history from my sister is like trying to get a refund from the tax man!

Re: Scooter issues - His Dudeness - 22-09-12

haha i know what you mean. it is hard to describe to someone whats happening if your not sure how it works. so you ruled out the battery, the starter is turning over the engine and your getting good spark, there's fresh petrol in it and you've had a look at the air filter but it still wont start. is that right? what condition were the plugs in after you tried to start it?

Re: Scooter issues - green_rider - 22-09-12

The plug seemed dry but there was a smell of unburnt fuel after cranking

Re: Scooter issues - His Dudeness - 22-09-12

i think you'll have to strip and clean out the carbs fully and go from there. but if you have a compression tester test the compression first.

Re: Scooter issues - solorider - 23-09-12

did you have the rear brake on when trying to start it?

Re: Scooter issues - green_rider - 23-09-12

Yes rear brake was on. Will get the Carb ultrasonically cleaned this week.

Had exactly the same problem with my sisters,

Turned out it was the side stand switch, get undernesth disconnect the switch and plug the wires in together to complete the circuit.

hope its that it was driving me insane.

Cheers james

Only a center stand on this one...

Re: Scooter issues - His Dudeness - 23-09-12

a can of carb cleaner would do the job. only cost a few quid too

Re: Scooter issues - green_rider - 23-09-12

Carb cleaner is a good plan. Once it stops chucking it down I'll give it a shot

Re: Scooter issues - Panthor - 24-09-12

If it has the switches on the brakes you need to pull to start it, make sure they are cleaned and ok as mine rusted up after being stored for a few months
