Hi guys I have just bought a FZS600 and love it to bits it's a 1998 model. I have a couple of problems with it, there first problem is the Speedo isn't working.

I heave been told they don't have a Speedo cable it's a sender box but can see there is a thin wire going to the front wheel and looks like a speedo cable.

Also the rev counter works but then sometimes doesn't work and drops back down to 0k and if it doesn't drop down to 0k it will stick on 4k.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Lewis,

There's plenty of information on common problems in the "Hot Poop" section. I'd check the wiring is intact (if it's been incorrectly routed at some point the bolts on the brake disc can wear through it) and connectors (in the plastic box under the tank as well as those on the instrument panel) are making good contact before taking the wheel off.
Having said that, chances are it's the rotor in the wheel has the lugs broken off... that is the most common cause of this problem.

Rev counter... similar story. Check the connection to the throttle position sensor (TPS) at the right hand end of the carbs as well as those under the tank.

I've literally just had this problem myself.

The rev counter has self-diagnostics and is telling you that the Speedo isn't working. In the manual it actually describes exactly what you are talking about - revs go to 0k then to 4k then to the actual reading. Its on page 21 of the PDF for the Owners Manual in the Downloads section or page 3-7 if you have a paper copy. But just for completeness, here is a screenshot Tongue

The cause is most commonly the lugs get snapped or broken on the speedo drive cog which is nested between the wheel and the nearside fork (left if you are sat on the bike) - basically follow that cable you found Wink

This is relatively cheap to replace if necessary.

However, you may be unlucky enough that its a broken unit which is what I had. I was quoted £100 for a replacement but managed to find someone breaking a Fazer and got the part for £25. In my opinion its worth searching for someone who is breaking a Fazer as it didn't take me long and saves you a lot of money.

The drive cog is item 15 in the diagram at the following site and the complete unit is item 14.

Thanks for your help, I am going to take the tank off tomorrow and look at the unit and see what's going on there. My friend is helping me so I will show him this.

Can't say much about the unit under the tank - I assume it just reads the pulses from the wheel and uses them accordingly (based on kilometres for EU and miles for UK) for mileage, speed, ecu etcetera

I haven't heard of one failing and I'm not really sure how you would test it?

And TPS on the RPM should read 5000rpm, it needs a little tweak!

Probably, yes. But I've had the speedo fail on three occasions: once was the sender itself, once was the cable routed wrongly and getting shorted (my fault entirely) and once was corrosion in the junction box. I've never broken the lugs off the rotor.

DeadEye has gone to the trouble of posting up the relevant section of the manual. What the rev counter is indicating is the speedo pulses aren't reaching the ECU, fix that and it'll go back to measuring engine revs.

I agree with Fazerider - mine was a failed sender unit (Item 14)

Although the broken lugs is the most common, it can't be ruled out until the wheel is taken off. Just covering all bases Smile

If you aren't too hot with electronic diagnostics and want to check the sender unit is delivering a pulse, take the front wheel out, turn the ignition on and rotate the removable piece in the sender unit, if you rotate it quick enough you should see the speedo needle twitch hence a signal is being sent/received.

You'll also see if the rotor still has it's lugs.

My speedo often doesn't work, I apply a little 'percusive maintenence' to the clocks and it works fine, I'm just too lazy to get around to checking the connections.
