Dremel recomendations ? - pitternator - 24-08-12

I am thinking of getting a dremel multi tool, primarily to experiment with cutting some screens to size...has anyone tried the cheaper alternatives from the likes of silverline etc...or is it best to stick to dremel ?
I ask since I have existed without a dremel for the whole of my life up to now, so may not use it much in future....but do want a tool which does the job.

I have had my trusty old Dremel coming up on 15 years, in this time my dad has had 3 of the other brand ones.. also you tend to find the spin speed is higher on the dremel. mine even though old does 33,000 rpm where as some my dad has had only did 25,000 rpm. you may think does it really matter at those speeds but i find it does when cutting.

In truth mine is on its 3rd set of brushes, the switch can be dodgy and the bearings make some noise but when it finally gives up i will get another.

I bought a Dremel 8000, 10.8v Cordless jobbie.  It came with a free torch attachment too.  I've found the corldess model to be real handy around the garage, home, caravan, etc. Amazing battery life because it has one of those Lithium-ion batteries. It also has a handy variable-speed range from 5000 to 35,000.

If you're in no hurry keep your eye open for ALDI special offers. I bought a variable speed dremel plus attachment set from Aldi four years ago and it's still going strong. Aldi use their specials as a loss leader to get you in and like their ad's say - Their stuff is 'Like brands but cheaper'!
