Buying fazer with high mileage - the_quick - 19-08-12 Hi guys, I'm new here. Just passed my mod2 and looking for the bike (yes don't own fazer yes, hope it is ok to ask you question about one). Anyway I have spotted Fazer 2003 with 85k miles on the clock. For a grand. Here is original description from the seller: This is a 2003 Yamaha Fazer 600 in Silver with only 1 owner from new ( a Policeman ) It has done 85,000 miles but the owner looked after it with regular servicing. It comes with a Datatool Alarm System 3 with Certificate and also comes with both Genuine Yamaha Keys with code tag. Service History up to 77,000 miles. New Piston Rings fitted at 66,548 miles. It has 2 x Datatool Alarm Fobs and it has a Scottoiler fitted. There are Engine Crash bars too. Mot Certificates from 2007 to 2013. Mot untill March 31st 2013 Over 40 various bills for servicing works. Owners Manual. This is a lot of miles for a bike I guess. I did have a look, the black paint on the engine is piling off, crash bars are bit rusty (under the paint) but main frame looks OK. No scratches that I could see. Engine starts on cold with out a problem, no strange noises etc. Tyres, sprockets and chain has still plenty of life in them. I think downpipes are stainless and they look really well/ So really looking for advice, is 85000 miles to much? Or shoul I buy it? Here some pics ![]() ![]() Re: Buying fazer with high mileage - AdieR - 20-08-12 The mileage in itself isn't a problem if it's been looked after. "MoT from 2007 - 2013" - is that first MoT with an expiry of 2007 (ie issued in 2006), or issued 2007 (expiry 2008)? Piston rings replaced at 66k miles - is there a reason given for that? It does look a bit scruffy, but that said, it may have been used year-round, or as a winter hack to avoid a different (expensive) bike getting scruffy. Is it a dealer sale or private? Re: Buying fazer with high mileage - Elise111s - 20-08-12 Hi mate, I've recently bought a 1998 model with only 28,000 miles on it for £1000. I found it does seem to be a buyers market atm and there's plenty about at around the £1k mark on Ebay, Autotrader, & Pistonheads. There's nothing wrong with buying a high miler providing it has full history, but at that mileage the suspension etc is going to be very soggy. I just think you should be able to get a much cleaner bike with much less miles for that money. Just my 2p worth, good luck with the search anyway! Alex Re: Buying fazer with high mileage - Fazer87 - 20-08-12 I'm sure its fine as long as it has a full history - but personally I wouldnt buy it. About 3 months ago i bougght a 99 Fizzer with 19k on the clock, full history, recent service, 11 months mot and tax, new tyres chain and sprockets for £1,100. Bikes are still really a leisure toy compared to cars and not a lot of people can afford to run both... meaning there are loads going at a decent rate. Take a look on bike trader, ebay, gumtree, preloved, there's loads to be had. Re: Buying fazer with high mileage - the_quick - 20-08-12 Thanks guys. Not sure for piston rings, though it might be part of maintenance. This is dealer sale. I'm looking for model with new head lamp design (don't like "star wars" look of older design - square lights) Yeah I think it does look bit scruffy, dealer said they just got it and going to clean it, but it looks like it was living out side all year round. But yeah, I think I'm going to walk away and hopefully find fazer in bit better shape. Thanks guys Re: Buying fazer with high mileage - Fazer87 - 20-08-12 Probably a good call dude.. where abouts are yo ubased? Re: Buying fazer with high mileage - the_quick - 20-08-12 Bexhill, East Sussex. So far not many bikes in my price range (max £1200) around here, but things do pop up from time to time. Thanks again Re: Buying fazer with high mileage - red98 - 20-08-12 yes, walk away from that one....much better, cleaner ones about for that money......good luck and let us know when you have found one ![]() Re: Buying fazer with high mileage - kebab19 - 20-08-12 IMO worth about £250-500 ....and you'll never sell it on, your only option would be to break it for parts to get some money back. And even then, all the parts would be rusted / corroded. As others have said, plenty more options out there, something with 30k miles has plenty of life left in it. |
