Went out for a ride yesterday afternoon, got home and found that I had lost my number plate............... Went to Halfords Waterlooville, sorry have not got the right size acrylics, The lovely lady called Havant, yes they have them in stock, thanks very much sez I and toddle over to Havant............ The guy took all the details down, said it be about 15 minutes, went upstairs to look at the pushbikes, came back down and collected the plate, got home and found that he had transposed a couple of the letters on the plate :wall
I tell you I am going back over there and give him a chinese burn around the neck

I'd leave it as is and so avoid parking fines and GATSOs. Then plead innocence and blame Halfords when finally tugged.

You were lucky- I had a cracked numberplate and parked outside Halfords so he sould see the car and asked for a straight replacement.
He wouldnt/couldnt provide me with a new one to match the front and back ones I already had without my birth cerificate V5 (its a lease car so I dont have one) and a note from both my mum and my dad to say I am of good character (I am 59!!)

We sell number plates at my work, every time we sell one we have a form to fill out, we need a driving licence, passport, utility bill or something to tell us you are who you are, then we need the vehicle reg. doct. to confirm the vehicle is leggit. Its a right PITA. We face having a £1000 fine if we sell a plate and don't have a form filled. We must keep said form for 3 years, makes number plates traceable.

I have just got it replaced after getting stuck in a traffic jam getting back into Havant, I assume there was an RTA, damn inconsiderate if you ask me.
good point about sticking the wrong'un on and belting through gatso's at a ton . I can imagine some old girl in a Honda Jazz getting a load of tickets and then being tazered for resisting arrest..... Robby, they can only find out you sold it if you wrote down the wrong number as well as fecced up the plate creation. Otherwise, your free to go!
Until you get a roadside stop by plod then you just plead ignorance. Assuming any speeding offences linked to the "wrong number" are over 6 months old, they cant get you for them either.

The responsibilty of a vehicles legality on the road lies with the driver and/or owner, no?
Do you check your change when you leave the shops?

I have heard of cars driving round for years with one number plate on teh front and another on the rear with two letters transposed like derildo has. Easy to misread it as it has all teh rigth lettres on theer juts ni teh wrnog plaec. Onyl a copmutre woudl pikc ti up quikcly.

Oh, officer, it seems I was unaware the my wheelbase was shorter than it should be. You see I didn't load it up. The apprentice done it and i just drove the truck out of the yard.

A few years ago I worked with a guy who used to park his car nose in to a wall. As I parked next to him and was invariably late for work I saw his rear number plate everyday. One day he was selling the car and I was looking around it and for some reason noticed that the number on his tax disc was different. His tax disc said 601 and his rear number plate said 610. We had another look and realised that the front plate matched the tax disc but the rear one didn't. Over three years previously someone had rear ended him in traffic and a new rear plate was fitted when the car was repaired and it was wrong. He'd been through 3 MoT tests in that time and nobody have ever noticed that the plates were different.
