Quite possibly a daft exhaust question? - 69oldskool - 19-06-12 Ok, i've decided a louder can is in order, but i'm far too tight to replace the standard one given it's in good shape & i've a long list of other "to do's" I'm guessing there's some wadding put in there by Mr Yamaha & co. My question being~ is it possible to remove some of it for a more sporting exhaust note & if so how? Re: Quite possibly a daft exhaust question? - darrsi - 19-06-12 I would imagine your back pressure would be affected, and there's no guessing what sound it would make? Re: Quite possibly a daft exhaust question? - rjd1 - 19-06-12 years ago before can`s were affordably we used to weld a drill bit to a bit of threaded bar and drill the inard`s out took a while an a bit fidly but worked well and you get all the gain of a free flow if done right Re: Quite possibly a daft exhaust question? - 69oldskool - 20-06-12 Ok, thanks for the replies folks. I do have a spare can to experiment with, just trying to get a handle on what exactly's inside. Re: Quite possibly a daft exhaust question? - Jamieg285 - 20-06-12 Not exactly bike related, or directly relevant, but a few years ago I was a tech inspector for the Legends race cars, which ran the 1200cc engines, with a Micron can. One race meet we picked up a different exhaust note on one of the cars, so pulled the exhaust apart to compare with a brand new item. The new one had what I believe to be some form of fibre glass matting, whereas the 'revised' version was packed with wire wool. The owner, and modifier of this exhaust is also the owner of a well known aftermarket stainless steel exhaust company, so I guess he had some idea of what he was doing... Re: Quite possibly a daft exhaust question? - Fazerider - 20-06-12 I've had occasion to open up a couple of OE silencers and found them to have two or three chambers with a number of 1" tubes as interconnectors. I've not dismantled an original Fazer exhaust though, so will be interested to hear what you find. Other than the one on a little Yamaha 2-stroke I used for a while, the only silencers I've seen that employ a central perforated tube surrounded by an absorbent wadding have been after-market ones. I suspect that the noise and heat that glass fibre wadding is subjected to causes it to slowly disintegrate and blow out with the exhaust gases anyway. Re: Quite possibly a daft exhaust question? - JZS 600 - 20-06-12 anyone tried the Fuel brand end cans? They look pretty neat, seem to have a good write up and are reasonable priced. Got a fuel can on my FZS600 and it provides a great sounds....overrun is fantastic! It's loud enough when you want it to be but you can settle it down so it's not annoying when you just want to ride in a more relaxed manner.....passes the MOT without the baffle each time too! Re: Quite possibly a daft exhaust question? - JZS 600 - 20-06-12 Sounds like just the job! |
