Are there pro-republic British? - Motorbreath - 11-05-12

Just curious. Here in Spain we are a lot of people who do not want a king (worse if it is a stupid french king like this one and all his ascendants, put in charge after the death of a traitorous dictator who started a civil war to eliminate the republic). But a lot of foreign people think most of the spaniards are strongly monarchic.

I suspect that your kings and queens have made a far better job so I understand you like them. Also they are British too, not a family of retards dumped by the french. I just want to know if you are as monarchic as you seem. How many british prefer a republic?

I hope it does not turn to an angry argument. Sorry if it is not adequate to start a topic like this.

I myself am not a fan of the Monarch's could be as i am Scottish though and feel aggrieved by the story's in History. I see no real point to them, i argue that the do nothing and get paid for it, i have been told that they make up for that up in Tourism though!

Scotland looking to become independent, but unfortunately for me we are keeping the Monarchy as head of sate!

Anyway that's my opinion on it, but each to there own!  :rolleyes

Wasn't it a Scottish king that united England and Scotland?

Love the monarchy, of course our monarchy is respected across the world and the alternative is a President oohh lets be like the yanks etc.

Re: Are there pro-republic British? - DryRob - 11-05-12

We had this argument at work a few months back, the main points seem to be

Republicans:
Tourists would visit the UK without a royal family
They are unelected and could seize power from the government
They cost us money despite having massive wealth
France and the USA have done pretty well without a Royal family

Royalists:
They attract tourism
They won't seize power, their role in government is purely symbolic
They don't cost that much per person per year and do a lot of charity work
There are a part of our heritage and the rest of the world envy us

I honestly don't care either way but people on both sides are very passionate. It's all very interesting watching them argue about it.

Re: Are there pro-republic British? - steeeve66 - 11-05-12

little point in getting shot of them unless there's a better alternative - President Boris anyone? Ken even?? No thanks.

Australia had a vote on it a few years back and decided to keep the Royals, not out of any particular loyalty, but in the main because the alternative didn't look any better.

Re: Are there pro-republic British? - locksmith - 11-05-12

Just got to look at the crowds who turn out for royal events to realise how much they are wanted!
The Jubilee events will enforce that I'm sure.

Re: Are there pro-republic British? - Skippernick - 11-05-12

And its proven that they cost less than a president aswell.

Re: Are there pro-republic British? - mcyoungy - 11-05-12

Well you know if we had a total monarchy with just one of them on the take it would be much cheaper than the 650 odd self effacing tossers in parliament.

I tend towards a republic, how you can be proud of a family in charge with an ancestry of murders i do not know. But moving on I think the fairest compromise is PRIVATISATION.

Cromwell lot is a whole new subject, we all know what the house of commons is full of.

Re: Are there pro-republic British? - DryRob - 12-05-12
