carb replacing - markd - 22-04-12
Hi guys and gals anyone have a rough idea me how much it would cost to have a mechanic replace carbs amd rubbers ave got 98 fzs 600 drinking fuel been suggested lets may have been drilled. have just had full service costing nearly 300. And still on better. all ideas appreciated

I'd probably charge somewhere around £45 to do it.
Have you got the manual downloaded from this site? Its not to much of an awkward job if you fancy doing it yourself. I'd be interested to see what your carbs are like inside first before forking out for another set.

What are you saying, that your bike is guzzling fuel and the carb rubber inlets are possibly at fault?

No but they are cracked and thought would need to replace them after replacing or removing carbs..?

They all crack on the surface, but take ages to rot right through.
Its highly unlikely to be the carb rubbers (but not impossible) causing your problems. I thought perished rubbers would make the bike run leaner (excess air getting into cylinders), not richer?
Can you post a pic up of their condition?

My mechanic has said its seriously over fueling and is sluggish at low speed

over fuelling......... worn needles or emulsion tubes? huge big jets fitted from a dynojet kit?

dont forget a filthy / clogged air filter will enrichen the mix. just my spoutings !

cracked inlets would lean it out from letting excessive air in, not cause over fueling wouldnt it? what did your 300 quid service get ya?

Oil filter brake pads indicator oil change. Plus labour costing nearly nearly

well none of that stuff would solve your running problems. check the easy stuff next like the air filter and plugs before spending any more money. the plugs should you a good indication of how the engine is running

could also be float heights set wrong. as said do the easy bits first. whereabouts are you? maybe someone nearby can offer some help?

is the filter clean? I had a k&n that was absolutely choked with crud. horrible things. need a good clean often.

when you say its drinking fuel. how much are you talking about? what sort of mpg are you getting?
