Problem starting on frosty mornings? - chunk166 - 27-03-12

Ok, this has happened 3 times now! On cold, frosty mornings my bike will not turn over & all the clock readings go back to zero except the mileage!, It's like the battery is knackered? but if i bump start it & run it for 5 mins, turn it off & leave it for 10 mins it will start like its ok?
Have you Guy 'n' Girls got any suggestions, should i just buy a new battery as i've not seen this happen on other bikes??

Cheers

Ray

Check there are no corroded or loose contacts on the battery or elsewhere. A voltmeter can tell you a lot about battery and wiring condition. But yes, it pretty much sounds like the battery is on the way out.
The chemical reaction in the battery works slower the lower the temperature is, so there are fewer cranking amps available... and cold engines are harder to turn over.  Once you've bump started it and run it for a bit the engine is warm, the battery has had a top-up charge and that makes enough of a difference for it to be able to restart the engine.

Thanks for your reply,i will have a check over of the connections & probably buy another battery, may use the older one as a spare  Big Grin

See if you can borrow a charger before you run out and get a new battery or take it out for a long blast at weekend, lots of short trips in the cold won't give the battery chance to recover the charge used starting the engine.

Mine was doing this, a 50 mile ride out with no lights/heated grips on solved it for me.

It happened 2 days after riding 235miles to Lincolnshire  :rolleyes , i do have a Datatool 3 alarm fitted. I'm not sure how old the battery is? My bike lives outside so i can't put it on an optimate either which would be nice if i could!!
