MOT Fail - Tefer - 17-03-12

Bike failed MOT on Yesterday.

Front brakes binding to excess. Had both Calipers off, cleaned up and all seems to be good but the front wheel does still seem to stick, maybe not as bad but i have to take it back for Monday Re-Test?

Re: MOT Fail - solorider - 17-03-12

chances are you have some corrosion in the seal recess, you would be better off getting the pistons out and clean it all up with new seals,i have in the past reused the seal with no leaks if you cannot get some seals quickly or need the bike back on the road asap

Re: MOT Fail - fazersharp - 19-03-12

When you say still sticks, I dont think that the wheel should spin freely untill gravity stops it, as the pads do always slightly touch at all times. What you had was excessive so giving a good clean should be all you need.

Re: MOT Fail - Tefer - 19-03-12

Thanks.

Back in today, it feels noticeably different when riding. If i lift the bike and spin the wheel it does nearly a rotation before stopping. My pals FZS does spin freely though so i might do a bigger clean up with new seals at different time!

Re: MOT Fail - BT - 21-03-12

I think you are only looking for a full rotation ,as said it's not expected to roll continually,
pump the pistons out gently ,use a piece of wood to stop them popping out totally and use an old or new stiff tooth brush and brake cleaner to scrub all around piston and seal.I have found when they are clean and free you can push them back in by hand(open resevoir top to let pressure off)

Re: MOT Fail - Tefer - 21-03-12

MOT station said that it was still excessive on Monday, so that was the re-test failed aswell.

Back in again today, really hope it passes this time, all that's left for me to do is replace all parts in Front brakes. Pads removed, toothbrushed the caliper with brake cleaner, all pistons moving in by hand and seems reall good, fire the wheel back on and it still sticks a bit. As said it just feels like 4 pads are touching 2 discs so don't know how that can be excessive.

Re: MOT Fail - bikemad62 - 04-05-12

Maybe your disks are warped!! Get a pencil hold it on the fork leg firmly. The point should be close but not touching spin the wheel if the pencil touches or the gap grows after its been set you may want to consider new disks.

Re: MOT Fail - His Dudeness - 04-05-12

if theres crap in behind the seals then cleaning the exterior isn't going to help.

Re: MOT Fail - Fazer Jake - 04-05-12

Could be a number of things, for me there was crap on the calipers and the pins so i gave it a good clean up and bled the brakes.

Re: MOT Fail - red98 - 05-05-12

yes...as a few people have already said...a realy good clean and make sure the pads are not binding in the caliper and also check the discs are not warped.....good luck with the mot...and dont forget to tell us how you get on  Smile

Re: MOT Fail - Tefer - 05-05-12
