Throttle Problem - GecHo - 15-03-12

not sure if its just my fazer or its the norm but the best way i can explain is all oor nothing, if i try to be gentle with the throttle lets say round an island its very hard to get smooth throttle if at all possible, its very jerky and maybe too responsive, at first i thought it was me not used to the fazer but my friend has an r1 and said exaxtly the same, we swapped for a while the other day and found his r1 much much better throttle control, any ides what can be the cause or is this normal, carbs have been balanced around 1000 miles ago throttle has been adjusted (not at carbs) new fuel just done a service, filter oil plugs. also what is correct carb mixture (how many turns) k&n filter and micron can not been ivanized :{

cheers Mick

Re: Throttle Problem - PieEater - 15-03-12

I understand that the bike on stock fuelling runs lean at low revs, fitting a K&N filter and less restrictive can will make the problem worse so this could be the issue. When I fitted a K&N and before I had the bike Ivanised I adjusted the mixture screws to 3 and a half turns out (standard is 2) as suggested by Mike (aka the Ivanisor). Also have you checked the TPS (throttle position sensor)?

Re: Throttle Problem - 1967fazer - 15-03-12

I have the same problem with my '02 gen 1, I recently had it on a dyno and the fuel air mix was running lean at lower revs and then flips to running rich further up the rev range, its not been Ivanised (yet) but it would appear this is the way to go for smoother running.

Re: Throttle Problem - Falcon 269 - 16-03-12

I agree with PieEater's diagnosis. Smile

What year is your Fazer?  I ask 'cos the pre-03 models were a little worse on the lean surge side of things.  Yamaha changed the needle spacers from 03 onwards to reduce the problem.

Mike

Re: Throttle Problem - GecHo - 16-03-12

i will check the mixture and give it a whirl, i have read about the tps and set mine to 5 but didnt have the revs upto 3500 would this make a difference what would you gues be my best stting with my setup
thanks for replies

Re: Throttle Problem - Falcon 269 - 17-03-12

Tweaking the TPS isn't going to resolve your problem but you could try the engine-running method if you wish.

Alternatively, advance the TPS unit position slightly from the 5k tacho reading position until tacho needle flicks between 5k and 10k.  You'll get the same result as doing it with the engine-running but without pissing off the neighbours. Smile

Re: Throttle Problem - pitternator - 17-03-12

whats the history of the bike?...have you just bought it or has this just developed. IIRC  my first stock fazer  ran smoothly  without jerks, but was relatively unresponsive. Fitting a jet kit really changes the throttle response. However with both bikes of mine, I never had any jerky throttle. Mine were 2001 and 2004 models.
My recomendation is check all the obvious things including the airbox is clear of any debris !...but the long term solution is to fit  a jet kit with appropriate filter and end can.

As a comparison my 04 bike has had the full monty kit fitted with  a bmc filter and its super smooth and very responsive. Dyno gives almost perfect fuel air ratio, very smooth flat torque curve ( 78 ft /lb max) with 138 bhp max. Its a superb engine, and a delight to ride at any speed.

Re: Throttle Problem - ghostbiker - 17-03-12

My 2004 was very jerky at low revs, turning at jcts or slow riding was very on or off. i dont think it was so much the bike but the dynojet kit that was fitted by the original owner. it compleatly changed with the ivans full monty.
has got a little lumpy lately but i know its due a carb ballance, well over due realy. unforgivable as i have my own carb tune!

Re: Throttle Problem - GecHo - 17-03-12

the bike is o3 i bought it last july, its got 21k on the clock but was dropped and has no fairing and now fitted with twin dominators i have since put renthal bars and bar mirrors on it and just reently done the service. to be honest i thought it was me not having any throttle control as im getting old now lol but it was after a swap with my friend who also commented on it but he also thought it was himself as not being used to the bike. for sure if i had 2 or 3 hunderd quid laying around i would defo have the ivans full monty done by Falcon but just dont have the funds. i am close to selling the bike as sometimes i feel its going to spit me off. like i say the throttle is what i call all or nothing which is great when your after a quick getaway not not so great when going slow in traffic
thanks again for the replies
cheers Mick

Re: Throttle Problem - phil on a fazer - 27-03-12

my 04 thou is exactly the same, small roundabouts in the wet is a nightmare!!

Mines been ivanised though, the problem has been getting worse over the last year or so.  :\

Re: Throttle Problem - Gray fox - 27-03-12

Had the same problem with my 02 Fazer 1000.,found it really difficult to get out of corners smoothly. Since fitting a full monty Ivans kit the problem has gone and now it's a delight to power out of bends from a closed throttle position. This is a massive benefit in the wet.

Do this throttle tube mod to ease the pain a bit (post 1)

Try running a few tanks of carb cleaner through the system, Phil.  You could be suffering a little obstruction to the pilot jets.  Catch before they close up completely and prevent the carb cleaner from doing its thing.

Like Redex? my local bike shop said i shouldn't use it because it was designed for car carbs (bigger). I have used it in the past though with no probs.

Not sure if this will contribute but my cush drive is a little worn. I remember when i had the wheel out, if i Lent it over 1 rubber would fall straight out and another 2 would come half way out. Pack them with bike inertubes or buy new ones??

Re: Throttle Problem - ghostbiker - 28-03-12

a worn cush drive wouldnt help the initial bite as you roll on, try packing with innertube and if it helps buy a new cushdrive?
