My Fazer is feeling very very wrong. HELP!! :-( - Skinbeatersam - 18-01-12 My beautiful Fazer (2000 FZS600 Model) has started to develop a problem. On Monday I noticed that it started to feel quite weak, and breathless, and as soon as I started to put the choke in it would stop at ever single traffic light. It would fire up again ok, but I'd ever have to leave the choke open, or keep the throttle on a tad to stop it stalling. It has also had a massive power reduction, and feels like I am riding through treacle. The Brakes work fine, the wheels turn freely, and the horrid feeling goes when I am coasting along. I have also had a HUGE drop in fuel economy. A full tank has only done me 90miles (eeeeck!!) I think I might have flooded the cylinder, and that has damaged the plug, so that all cylinders aren't firing. However, does this sound like it could be anything else?? I want to take it to a garage (so if anyone knows any good ones in North London please let me know) but I don't want them to create jobs in order to nick my cash. Help. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( Re: My Fazer is feeling very very wrong. HELP!! :-( - Major Rant - 18-01-12 Well, all that fuel must be going somewhere ... Options are: - It goes down the exhaust pipe unburnt - you'd smell it running rich (just smells of petrol really, like an old carburetted car on choke). - It goes down the exhaust pipe partly burnt - you'd see smoke. - It gets burnt and makes power - you'd either go faster, or your brakes would get very hot. - It's leaking somewhere - you'd smell it as liquid petrol. So as a first pass, do you see/smell any of those symptoms? :\ Random thought: You haven't put any diesel in it by mistake, have you? Random Question: What do the plug centre electrodes look like? Re: My Fazer is feeling very very wrong. HELP!! :-( - Oxygen - 18-01-12 Where in north London Re: My Fazer is feeling very very wrong. HELP!! :-( - Minty - 18-01-12 Could be running on 3 cylinders, plug failed, runs awful at lower revs with bad mpg, higher revs mask it as they are running the cylinder that's not firing. Try dropping a ht lead off a one plug at a time, if you find one that makes no difference then that's the one! Re: My Fazer is feeling very very wrong. HELP!! :-( - Skinbeatersam - 18-01-12 I am in East Finchley. I was gonna take it to North London Motorcycle Training in Edgeware as I know they fix and service bikes. I think the fuel is going out of the exhaust, partly burnt as I have felt I have had to have the choke out due to the cold. The symptoms described by Minty are EXACTLY what's happening. As a newbie biker I have absolutely no idea how to get to the spark plugs. I'm quite reluctant to start taking it apart due to lack of tools, lack of garage space, and also not really knowing what I'm doing as well as lack of time to do it. I also think the fuel has gone on having the choke out to deal with the cold, and also on using more fuel to try and make up for the lack of power. How could this have happened?? It hasn't been dropped or anything like that. If it is this, would a good service fix it? Re: My Fazer is feeling very very wrong. HELP!! :-( - Minty - 18-01-12 If it's ready for a service may be worth it and they'll replace the plug or plugs if it is that. Re: My Fazer is feeling very very wrong. HELP!! :-( - Skinbeatersam - 18-01-12 How much should I expect to pay for a service?? What's fair, and what's a massive rip off?? Re: My Fazer is feeling very very wrong. Your looking at 150-200 off a yamaha dealer tbh Re: My Fazer is feeling very very wrong. HELP!! :-( - Minty - 18-01-12 Standard service probably about £150 oil/filter, antifreeze, brake fluid change plus your plugs if required. I had one done for that last year at a small independant shop that only did tuning, servicing and MOT's. Dealers will probably be double that. Could try asking just for an oil and filter change and check & sort the running problem. Re: My Fazer is feeling very very wrong. HELP!! :-( - Skinbeatersam - 18-01-12 WOW!! £150 is a lot. The quote I had was about £50 for a service at North London Motorcycle Training. Does anyone know of a link that has a step by step guide to doing the plugs on a Fazer?? I don't have a manual I'm afraid. Re: My Fazer is feeling very very wrong. I got the work shop manual off the net it maybe what's on the thread http://www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.html Re: My Fazer is feeling very very wrong. HELP!! :-( - Skinbeatersam - 18-01-12 Cheers guys. Finally, will any spark plug do? Or is there a special kind?? Re: My Fazer is feeling very very wrong. HELP!! :-( - Minty - 18-01-12 £50 for a service, get it done!, but I suspect parts are on top of that, semi synth oil & filter will be £30, even a cheap mineral oil & filter from someone like busters is about £23. All depends on what sort of service, short/full etc. Re: My Fazer is feeling very very wrong. HELP!! :-( - Major Rant - 18-01-12 Having the tools is one thing... but if its the first plug you've ever changed then be carefull you get the spanner seated on the plug and that you turn the spanner the right direction without putting side-force on the plug or you will snap the plug - and that's usually bad. I have a piano, but it emits no Mozart-like sounds when I sit down at it for some reason :\ . Re: My Fazer is feeling very very wrong. HELP!! :-( - fazersharp - 18-01-12 Spark plugs for my 98 fzs600 are NGK CR8E - just got them today. Somone better that me may say otherwise but would a blocked air filter cause these problems not enough air = too much fuel does it not Have a look at my thread about not starting as somone said some interesting stuff about the choke - it may help http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,1402.0.html Re: My Fazer is feeling very very wrong. HELP!! :-( - robby boy - 19-01-12 Try giving it a start and let it run for a few minutes, have a feel of the exhaust headers where they come out of the cylinder head (careful now they could be hot!! :eek ), if one of them is cold that is the cylinder with the problem, either HT lead, coil or spark plug. Hope this helps. oh aye, and if you are going to change the plugs get the right ones for the bike. |
