Hyperpro spring kit - FuZzBoM - 11-01-12

Hi guys, has anyone fitted a hyperpro spring kit? if so made any difference?
just feels a tad soft to ride so a little firmer would be nice.

cheers.

Re: Hyperpro spring kit - kebab19 - 11-01-12

Not quite the same but I had 'em fitted to my 1000, better than standard but wasn't mega-impressed.

Cheapest option - you could try this 1000 mod on the 600, where you remove an inch off the 'tightest' coil ends, then make spacers an inch longer to compensate. Probably between £5-20 depending on whether you change the fork oil. Certainly firms up the 1000's forks nicely.

Next option is a pair of Hagon or K-tech springs. As with the standard springs, Hagon are also progressive whereas K-techs would be linear springs suited to your requested weight (better). £60(Hagon) £90(K-tech) for springs

Finally you might consider my old Gold valve conversion to give you compression and rebound adjustment, although it'll cost more like £200 :-D

Re: Hyperpro spring kit - Motorbreath - 11-01-12

I am interested too. What my mechanic did few days ago was putting SAE 20. When he told me what he did I thought the bike would ride like crap, but it doesn't feel bad, specially for being on winter. I have to ride it harder yet to be sure. SAE 10 was not good on summer fast rides in Spain, but maybe the way to go is SAE 15.

Re: Hyperpro spring kit - FuZzBoM - 12-01-12

Cheers for the info. not so keen on cutting things if i am honest. so different fork springs and shock would be my preference.

Wemoto do the Hagon shock and the fork springs so could be tempted with that
http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/Yamaha/FZS_600_Fazer_SP/02-03/picture/Fork_Springs_Progressive_-_Hagon_-_Pair/

the reason i asked about hyperpro was because they do a fork and shock spring kit including fork oil for under £200. seemed to be good value for money.

Re: Hyperpro spring kit - kebab19 - 12-01-12

The Hyperpro sounds like reasonable value if you can do the rear spring swap yourself, otherwise it'll probably be another £50 for a suspension shop to change it over.....and if it's a standard rear shock, then there's the possibility of it being knackered. It's non-rebuildable unless you go for a Schrader valve conversion(nowt wrong with that), but again only makes financial sense if you can D.I.Y. or keep the bike long-term. How many miles has it done?

Do however go for the Hagon front fork springs & fork oil, I'd mix 10w & 15w to give 12.5w

Re: Hyperpro spring kit - FuZzBoM - 12-01-12

should be able to do it myself. i am fairly good with the ole spanners and i have spring compressors if needed.
if i am honest i have no idea how long i will keep it. it is my 1st big bike and i am a fairly large chap so i just wanted a slightly firmer ride. i know its not a sports bike and i do not intend to treat it as such but having confidence is a must i feel Tongue

My little Fazer has done just over 17k so not massive mileage but could do with being a little fresher.

The hagon fork springs were also a consideration but i have heard a few stories of them making a bike feel naff though. a mate had shock and fork spring set on his Ducati 600ss many moons ago that came with the bike. he said it didn't feel right and purchased some original springs (at a high cost) and this improved it greatly.but then a 600ss is a different kettle of fish from the fazer.

Re: Hyperpro spring kit - kebab19 - 13-01-12

'Large chap' = big-boned?  ;-) that explains the problem.

The bottom line is that the fzs600 like most other budget bikes uses forks with damper rod mechanisms, which are just...ok. Cartridge fork design is superior but nothing from other bikes can be fitted without major ball-ache.

http://www.racetech.com/articles/CartridgeForks.htm

Fitting Hagons & slightly heavier oil apparently helps a fair bit, but they are a one size fits all progressive spring, as indeed are the OEM springs. Linear springs matched to your weight would be a better idea, probably 0.95kg/mm or 1.0kg/mm. The standard springs are dual rate but work out around 0.75kg/mm, suitable for a 10 stone rider - not enough to support you even with preload maxed out! Search the old Foccer site for Hagon front fork spring conversions & how they were rated.

I'd still go with either Hagons or K-tech springs for the front. My GoldValve conversion effectively emulates a cartridge fork and offers much more damping variability with preload, compression and rebound, but probably isnt a cost effective solution for you.

Re: Hyperpro spring kit - FuZzBoM - 13-01-12

hmm OK then agreed i do need to address the forks because i am an extra 7 stone on-top of its designed weight lol.
so that i can put it back if needed i will go with either the hagon or hyperpro springs for the front and heavier oil. i will have a think about the rear. the rear shock preload is currently 2 from top so it does need to be looked at.
many thanks for info.

Re: Hyperpro spring kit - thom_1991 - 23-01-12

Anybody know what shock spring rating's going to be best for an 11 stone (me!) rider. I've got linear .90kg/mm springs in the forks which give me 30mm rider sag with the preload about in the middle of it's adjustment. I know the stock shock (though mines now wearing a Nitron track shock from an Nc 30...) has a 14.7kg/mm spring but i've no idea who that's considered an ideal spring for?

Re: Hyperpro spring kit - FuZzBoM - 02-03-12

Way over my head that last post.. anyhow just a quick update i went for the hyperpro kit and if any one is interested it came with 20w oil.

Re: Hyperpro spring kit - Dead Eye - 02-03-12

Well if the suspension is designed for a 10 stone rider then god knows how its coping with me  :o

I have FuZzBoM beat in terms of weight but dont seem to have any issues with the ride - but I have nothing to compare to since this is my first bike (ignorance is bliss I guess) Tongue

Re: Hyperpro spring kit - FuZzBoM - 03-03-12

Calm down dead eye, it's not a competition lol.
In truth it is my 1st big bike as well. might be my mechanic backround but i just felt i wasn't right with my weight on it. front end diving etc. so i decided to do someting about it. plan to fit the kit tomorrow so will see how it goes and let you lot know.

Re: Hyperpro spring kit - kebab19 - 03-03-12

Spring rate chart here:

http://www.mad-ducati.com/Technical/racetech/SpringChart.html

Work out bike & rider weight combined (FZS600 wet weight 462 lbs) then follow across 'sport' line where it intersects for correct spring weight

Re: Hyperpro spring kit - FuZzBoM - 04-03-12

Ahh cheers Kebab, that makes sense now. i would agree it is roughly 1.0kg/mm now i know this figure how can i apply that to the bike?
I have just been looking at the instructions of the spring kit and i noticed it specifies to have the forks 15mm through the top yolks from the standard 0mm. Given i am a fat git, should i just stick with standard or maybe go half way?

Re: Hyperpro spring kit - kebab19 - 04-03-12

Sadly the chart explains the obvious solution, but the springs you can buy for the Fazer are not linear, they are all (as far as I'm aware) dual rate progressives. Still, it would be fairly easy to fit a set of 1.0kg/mm springs from another bike with 41mm forks with a bit of investigation.

The Hagon / Hyperpro replacement springs are progressive, meaning they have about two thirds of the spring with loose / wide coils & the final third with coils very close together. Effectively it's a dual-rate spring that is a one-size-fits-all solution, and so can be roughly equivalent to 1.0kg/mm springs. Most suspension shops won't touch progressive springs as they are difficult to fine-tune, particularly for racing / trackdays. For road use however, they are fine.

Raising the forks up through the yokes will improve the handling but reduce ground clearance & the amount of travel the fork has. I suspect you're being asked to do this to allow more weight over the front-end. I take it you have to either fit heavier fork oil or change the height of the fluid inside the fork to compensate?

Fit a cable tie first so you can see how much travel is being used up. I would start @ 5mm, then if ok go to 10mm, then 15mm if you still have a safe amount of fork travel left.

I got mine from Firefox Racing they're linear K-tech .85kg/mm. IIRC they're the same fit as for the early Hornet 600.

Basically i was wanting to know what weight spring is best for the Fazer's shock for 11 stone me. Unlike forks where you'd use pretty much the same rating spring for the same rider regardless of bike the right shock spring for say a 10 stone rider will be different from one bike to another.

As it turns out i took my Nitron in to be re-sprung for me and according to an Ohlins book they had it needed a 925lb/inch or 16.5kg/mm. It was actually wearing a 725lb spring which would explain why it felt so soft. The standard shock wears a 14.7kg/mm spring which would suggest the standard shocks only sprung right for people who weigh less than 11 stone.

I hope this makes sense.

Re: Hyperpro spring kit - wraith600 - 08-03-12

totally aggree with  kebab  Smile  if you still feel the need to preload the springs an easy way is just put a 10mm+ spacer on top[ easy made from washers / an old socket ] . and the oil change is the best way to adjust the damping best start with the std amount then add 5ml / 10 ml  max at a time extra and go for a run to much will lock the front up then blow the seals  :thumbdown

Re: Hyperpro spring kit - virtual bodysnatcher - 08-03-12

try these guys for linear springs, just ordered some with oil for mine, less than £80 I think, is in euros! They are clearing stock..... haven't arrived yet but only ordered last Friday and come from Belgium, guy I e-mailed with seemed like he knows his stuff.....

I did the same a few weeks ago, I ordered 1kg/mm. Fine product, same measurements as the 99 OEM springs. If you order a stiff pair as I did you should put shorter spacers or it will be to stiff. SAE 20 feels good to (recommended by Ohlins and my mechanic).
