Twiddling my thumbs - peterjca - 19-12-11

I'm off to work at a start-up company in January. Having only just changed jobs, it was awkward resigning on the day my three month probationary period was up. HR wanted me to do a powerpoint presentation on my first three months and I thought what's the point of lying about being satisfied by the work. In actual fact I was poached by the company that interviewed me the day after my current employer interviewed me. The start-up hadn't got its funding in place and so couldn't offer me the job then. Bit of a risky move, but it's a good one career-wise. In at the start as a technical architect to take a prototype (which won an innovation award) to a sellable software product, with lots of R&D along the way.

I've been twiddling my thumbs here the last week and a bit with little to do but surf the internet Smile

Good luck with it. I've considered trying to make a change but with the market so volatile I decided against it.

Best of luck!

how did the presentation go? how many people was it in front off?

I hate doing things like that in front of large groups!

Re: Twiddling my thumbs - peterjca - 20-12-11

I cancelled the presentation as there was simply no point. I've got no problems with giving presentations as long as I'm confident with what I'm going to say (which is NOT the same as being full of bullshit!).

I really like the people I'm working with here, but their software development practices and the quality of their code and products is quite poor. Most of the time I was wrestling with the crappiest monolithic code I'd ever seen, crap tools and crap processes -- rather than being truly productive! It was challenging but for all the wrong reasons. What lured me here was the promise of a product rewrite which turned out to be more aspirational on their part and a year away. Can't stay on the promise of things improving so far down the line.

New job starts two weeks today. I had to extend my insurance to cover business trips on the bike which will happen now and again. Claiming mileage expenses will be a completely new experience for me!

Still twiddling my thumbs obviously... Smile

Good luck in the new job.

Reminds me of when I was working for Agfa and I had won a holiday but knew I was leaving when I returned. As it happens the Sales Director and I were the only single guys on the trip so we sank a few beers together.

It amused me no end when I returned to find out that all the jealous toadies back in the office had started a rumour that I was kissing the boss's arse all week to get promotion.................. then I resigned and started my new job in Los Angeles

Mwahahahahahah
