what oil should i use!!!!! - cable tie - 15-12-11

Oh i probably opened a can of worms with this question, however i noted some foccers buy car spec oil, and whilst ive been tinkering with cases and now need to fill the engine up with oil, i have afew options.

bike spec comp4 10-40 semi syn £39
bike spec comp4 10-40 fully syn £47

car spec mobil one 10-40 semi syn £29
car spec mobil one 0-40 fully syn £26 (special offer in halfaurds)

Now in the past ive always put comp4 semi syn however if i can buy the same product but cheaper than im game

so who puts what in the engine and would you recomm fully syn!! bikes done 12k

Re: what oil should i use!!!!! - devilsyam - 15-12-11

there have been over the years very heated discussions on this and the different make so tiz a case pick your own poison

in a nutshell i use and have for ages used motul semi 5100 of eblag with a filter 29.99 delivered

i recall mike going into grat depth with the late hotdog on the construction of oils and the makes

all i summized out of it (most way over me head) was a gal of shell top bollock was the same as asda (well not literally)

so take ya pick

Re: what oil should i use!!!!! - cable tie - 15-12-11

All im aware is Auto oils that say "Energy Conserving" are not recommended for M/Cs' because they contain "friction modifiers" (additives) which can affect the operation and longevity of the "wet clutch" so If the oil does not say "energy conserving" than it would appear it acceptable for use in M/C, with wet clutch's

so do i do smi or full syn and 10w40 or 0w30 or 5w30 deffo confusing  :rolleyes

Re: what oil should i use!!!!! - BMCfaz - 15-12-11

I've used Halfrauds semi synth M/C oil on several bikes, and it seems to be as good as anything at a reasonable price.

Re: what oil should i use!!!!! - nickodemon - 16-12-11

You can't go wrong with silkolene oil. Either comp 4 or super 4. Comp4 and super 4 are classed as semi synthetic. Comp 4 has a higher amount of synthetic oil than super 4. I normally use super 4. I find silkolene oil retains its cleanliness and remains clearer for longer than halfords oil and some other oils i have used. I used fully synthetic hein gericke oil and found gearchanges a bit clunky. I think fazers run better with semi synthetic oils. I have never used car oils in any of my bikes as cars have dry clutches and their are slippier ingredients that could make the clutch slip. Mind you my brother has used car oil in his vfr with no ill effects :eek  Good luck Smile

Re: what oil should i use!!!!! - nickodemon - 16-12-11

Forgot to add M & P are doing a super4 pack, which includes oil filter and chain lube for £29 inc postage. :lol

Re: what oil should i use!!!!! - Fazerider - 16-12-11

I'm another Halfords M/C semi-synthetic 10W-40 user.
Some swear by car oil, and it's possible those of us who look for the word "Motorcycle" on the container are paying over the odds, but it's a simple way of ensuring there's nothing that will bugger up the clutch in there and the price difference isn't very significant unless you do astronomical mileages. Theoretically, older classifications of oil could be better (SJ rather than the current SL) as they can contain higher levels of wear reducer ZDDP... though since oil companies like to keep the recipe for their products secret, there's no easy way of telling whether an SJ oil actually has any of the stuff in there anyway.

Re: what oil should i use!!!!! - Falcon 269 - 16-12-11

I looked into this a lot because bike-specific oils in Spain are stupid expensive.  Try 75-80 euros for 4 ltrs of Castrol fully synth!

For years I've been running Carrefour own-brand 5w-50 fully synth auto oil, which reputedly comes out of the Mobil One production facility in France.  No clutch issues.  Gear change is like hot knife through butter.  5ltrs for 25 euros.  I opted to switch to fully synth at around 18k miles when I moved here 'cos it's 'kin hot in the summer.

I would stay with semi-synth at that mileage on yours.  In fact, I'd probably stay with it regardless because it's frequency of change that's more important.  Since we service at 4k miles, semi synth is plenty good enough.  Your Mobil One 10w/40 looks like a good buy in that case.

Re: what oil should i use!!!!! - ZiggyCol - 16-12-11

Another vote for Halford's semi-synth MC oil. But I always use an official Yam filter.

Re: what oil should i use!!!!! - bigralphie - 16-12-11

Another Motul user here ,or HG own brand which is also by Motul

Re: what oil should i use!!!!! - ghostbiker - 16-12-11

I normaly use Silkolen semi synth in the fazer but have offten used the halfors m/c oil in other bikes with no issue.
I have never used a car oil in a bike but i know of others that have with no issues. but its not something i would do.

as far as i know there is little real diff in m/c spec oils if your doing reg changes which are much more important than quality.

Put WD40 in yours Dave it will not matter you do not ride it anyway it is allways in bits.  :rollin :rollin :rollin

Re: what oil should i use!!!!! - fazed600 - 17-12-11

Halfords fully synthetic 5w-40 goes in my GSXR. Under £30 for five litres (beats the usual 4 litre containers). Claims to 'exceed' all specs for bike engines.

I always change the oil filter every time as well for the sake of a tenner.

Re: what oil should i use!!!!! - pitternator - 18-12-11

Hi dave
I always use halfords semi synth bike oil, since it meets Yamaha spec for oil, is cheap, and I change mostly at 3000 mile intervals. I have gone to 6000 once or twice too. I cant tell any diffrence with castrol.TBH for our road needs, and frequency of changes , I think the oil is plenty good enuff. But then again...I dont wear designer clothes, so why would I pay for silkolene !    :lol

Re: what oil should i use!!!!! - cable tie - 18-12-11

well im one not to turn a bargain down and was offered 3 x 4ltr tubs castrol power 1 10w40 fully synthetic for £45 and 3 genuine yamaha filters for £15, i know some peeps say fully syn is waisted on the fazer however at that price i thought its too good to turn down, so ive got enougth for 4 oil changes .

Err, where were those in the above list of options? Wink

Dave, you are the architypal 'fell in it and came up smelling of roses' man.

Actually, it's old stock ... probably passed its Shell-by date.

Coat, hat, gone ...........  :rollin

Re: what oil should i use!!!!! - mikelockyer - 19-12-11

Please do not use car oil of any sort in a motor cycle engine. There is a difference, but as I am not a chemist I cant clearly explain the difference. I have used only good quality engine oil on my bikes for the past 50 years and have never had a mechanical issue that you could put down to lubrication problems. Be careful. Have a good Xmas. Ask Santa for some expensive oil.
