hesitation when opening throttle - nickodemon - 17-11-11

I've got an issue with my gen 1 fazer when i snap open the throttle it hesitates then picks up. if i roll the throttle open it's fine It seems worse when its cold. I noticed the exup valve was out of adjustment, so corrected it, i also set the throttle position sensor. The way i did it was that you raise the revs to 3800 rpm then adjust until the revs are at max then tighten turn off then on and adjust tick over. Both of the adjustments didn't seem to make much difference :rolleyes  Any ideas?

Forgot to add that when starting the bike i have to open the throttle a touch or it won't start. (Don't have to do that on my other fazer) Tickover is smooth enough, no misfiring. It also has the ivan's carb kit and 108'000 miles! :eek :eek

Airbox sealed & inlet not blocked ? Air filter need replaced? Carb rubbers cracked through?

Poor cold starting & 108k might mean tight valves, tho they rarely go much out of spec

Failing that perhaps something has worn out in the carbs themselves, perhaps one of the jets

I had a similar problem..all it was tho was airbox appateur slightly blocked with cig lighter pmsl...well funny

How long has this been happening?  Sudden onset or gradual deterioration?

When were plugs last changed?

Re: hesitation when opening throttle - Fazerider - 18-11-11

My FZS600 exhibits a similar effect. I suspect it is caused by the carb slides sticking: snapping open the throttle tends to pin the slide against the slot, if it's opened progressively the slide can rise normally.
I haven't tried experimenting with dry lubricants to see if that might help... suspect even if it does it probably wouldn't last long. Which would leave new(er) carbs as the solution.

Re: hesitation when opening throttle - nickodemon - 18-11-11

It's only started recently. Plugs changed less than 1000 miles ago. I'll take a look at the air filter, as it's the only thing i haven't checked. I will also take a look at the carb rubbers in case there's a leak. Next step is check valve clearances and carb balance.

Re: hesitation when opening throttle - nickodemon - 18-11-11

Checked the air filter it was okay. A little dirt when i gave it a good tap on the garage floor. One thing i did notice was the foam ring at the bottom of the filter was wet with petrol. the air box was slightly damp, but not full of petrol. There is a tube on the l/h side which had a bit of emulsified oil in it. I checked the end of the tube where it goes into a small black bottle beside the front chain sprocket then out the other side (breather) it was clear.

Re: hesitation when opening throttle - Falcon 269 - 18-11-11

The crankcase vents into the airbox so at that mileage I'd expect a little blow-by the rings, hence the oil/fuel mist in the airbox.

Leaky carb boots would cause a hanging idle and other more persistent problems, so that's not likely to be the cause.

Fazerider's explanation is feasible, for sure.

Try without the air filter to see if there's an improvement.  If you were able to knock dirt out, it might be more clogged up than your eyes lead you to believe. Smile

Also, consider trimming 1cm off the end of each plug lead.  They're screwed onto the plug caps and over time the end core gets brittle and the electrical connectivity is reduced.

Re: hesitation when opening throttle - nickodemon - 18-11-11

All advice noted Smile  Will have a look at the ht leads, but i don't notice a misfire and when i replaced all the plugs they were all the same. Cheers everybody! Any other ideas greatly appreciated. It is possible that i'm comparing both my fazers- 9500 miles compared to 108'000 miles. I think i will get the valve clearances checked and balance the carbs.

Anyway mike when are you coming back to Scotland for a visit and a 'caroline' curry :rollin Always welcome. u can even bring some foccers along too :lol

Ah, true, Nick ... been a while since I was in Sconnie Bottleland, eh?  Have to check my passport visa is still valid, though. :lol

Say 'hi' for me to your chef. Big Grin

Already done! I believe the last time you were here it was your birthday and we had a couple of bottles of vino, curry and a dvd. Great night, but sore head in the morning. If you want anymore curry recipes the missus will happily supply them. Chicken bazzigar is lovely! Smile

Mine is exactly the same blip the throttle and it will die open it slowly and its fine. I never found the problem and it only occurrs if the bike has been standing for a week or so. I tried some redex in the tank which seemed to help a bit.
