Shell filling stations hassle - bwizz - 05-11-11
I had a new variation of the usual , remove helmet , put bike on stand hassle, yesterday. when i was asked to move to another pump as they could not see me properly. I voted with my wheels and went somewhere else for fuel , I have also mailed shell to tell them of my veiws on their hassle biker policy. I expect that they can live without my weekly £50 or so, spent on fuel

I was asked to take my helmet off at a local esso garage last year, so I did, revealing a full balaclava.
The guy then served me with a big grin! He told me that they are told to make sure that motorcyclists and scooter riders remove their helmets but that balaclavas were never mentioned.
I usually fill up at a small independent garage when I`m near home because they don`t bother what you have got on, they want you to buy petrol off them.

Kind of reminds me when I was 18, and riding the 40 odd miles to the SSEB residential training centre on a Sunday night.
It was November and getting cold. So rather than packing most of the clothes I needed for the week, I wore them, including two pairs of jeans.
I needed to fill up my 1974 C90 before heading off. So filled it up, then popped into the shop to pay. It's then I remembered my wallet was in the inner pair of jeans.
So no I didn't take my helmet out but I did have to drop my troosers.

I use a local garage and have no problems, I have a caberg flip-face lid and usually pop the front up at low speed or stopped anyway, also had no hassle in the local tesco garage.
I bet they had a camera aimed at you somewhere anyway.
I would do the same, if they want me to strip off I'll go elsewhere with my cash.

Anon , I also use Caberg Flip Front "great helmet" but I still get hassle to remove it at Shell and Morrison's, Lots of places to fill up as hardly any variation on price around here

Sainsbury's introduced a similar policy a few years ago. I wrote and complained... pointing out that unless they employed a bouncer at the door, the helmet-clad thugs coming to rob the place (the reason the policy was introduced) were unlikely to honour the notices anyway.
They were pretty good about it, the person who responded said it would be brought up at their next safety meeting.
In the meantime, I continued to queue to pay with my helmet on, once I reached the cashier would remove it if asked (which held up the queue nicely as I juggled wallet, specs and then didn't have anywhere flat to put the helmet while I put my specs back on).
A couple of months after the "Please remove helmets" signs went up, they disappeared. :lol

I have 4 Shell stations within 5 miles of my home in Manchester and have never had a problem. Myabe it's the rainy weather!

i use the pay at pump thingy now, now i dont have to get off the bike or remove my helmet.... i call it intiative.... others call it lazy :lol
theres a station near work though (a small independant one) who never asks me to remove my helmet or pay first but makes all the cars do it...
i think he likes looking at me in my leathers though :rollin

Got to be honest here, I really can see why a garage would implement the helmet policy. So if asked and you are abusive that just fans the flames.
I know it can be a pita so if it upsets you don't go there next time!
And it has happened to me and there was a girl wearing a burka (or what ever they are called) in the same queue, so I politely mentioned the similarities of us both having our faces covered and never have been back there again.

just to add my 2 pennies worth. . . .
I often have to go into military bases and get a temporary vehicle pass. When I leave pass office its about 30 yard ride to the police post where i have to show my ID card and then have to remove sunglasses/ helmet/ gloves etc to prove it is me that is riding the bike!!
but i like the post saying use the pay @pump I hadn't thought of that!!!

As part of the Petroleum Licence conditions, Customer Assistants must
ensure that the person dispensing petroleum or LPG is aged 16 or
over, as it is against the law for anyone under 16 to have access to
fuel or the pumps. If the face of the person attempting to dispense
these fuels is obscured, the Customer Assistant can ask the person to
remove a motorcycle helmet, hood or baseball cap etc. A visual check
of this nature is often very helpful in determining if a person is of
the required minimum age. In addition, the Customer Assistant may ask
for proof of age, if they are still unsure.
As a matter of security, customers are asked to remove helmets before
entering the sales building to pay for the fuel.
We value your feedback on this matter and shall inform the relevant
department. Once again, thank you for taking time to write to Shell
and we appreciate the opportunity to address your concerns.

minimum age??? how many under 16's ride into a petrol station on a motorbike and pay for their petrol??

isn't there also a minimum age you have to be before you can get a credit card?
here's another idea for a frustrated customer (and will likely get some mixed reactions on here) - this seems like a perfect chance to get rid of the bottle of coppers you have in the house - take £20 from it with you next time, especially when they're busy and after having removed your lid etc in the queue, hand over the change.

nice idea however according to the royal mint you cant do that, mate of mine tried to pay a parking fine in pennies n 1/2p's and the court wouldn't accept it!!!
