Mate as with everything there's O rings and O rings, many of these assortment sets are cheap Chinese copies are fine for cold water applications, sinks tapes etc. They often aren't the correct material or size, 10ths of a mm make all the difference in automotive, heat, oils and fluids make the cheaper crap shrink, go brittle expand or melt.

a lesson learnt, will take a close look at the O ring when i remove it and see how it failed, save anyone else making the same school boy error...
not the end of the world though, new O ring should be with me tomorrow and will be an easier job the second time around

got the O ring on saturday, good service from FOWLERS :thumbup ...i struggled a bit when i removed the oil/waterpump last time so i had a damn good clear up in the garage, chucked a lot of stuff out and made a bit more room to make the job a little easier...just need the motivation now to get out there and make a start.....lunchtime now though :rolleyes

up early this morning and made a start on the mighty thou, jacked it up and put it on wooden blocks, can and downpipes off followed by sprocket cover,sump and oil strainer...going well...got a bit distracted now though, both my son and i are on furlough so we are taking the mountain bikes to Windsor great park,get a few miles in and some lunch in windsor.....have a nice day foccers :thumbup

had a lay in this morning, not up untill 9am not like me :rolleyes .............
bit more done this morning,pump is now out, took a short cut this time, managed to get it out without removing the clutch, a HUGE time saver , just enough room in there to slide the water pump end out of the engine casing, easing that end down and looping off the drive chain the other end...
couple of pictures showing the failed O ring oil seal and also the water pipe mounting bolt hole clearly bored all the way through, engine casing is about 10mm thick in that area which i would of thought was deep enough without boring all the way through......

It's highly likely the bolt hole isn't the source of the leak, rather the O ring is

iam with GNASHER on this,comparing the O ring that i replaced last time (cheap china selection box) to the new genuine yamaha one iam going to fit now,there is definite difference,a lot more flexable.....lesson learnt on this :thumbup
just about to refit the pump now, got to loop the chain back on the sprocket and get the pump housing back in the engine casing,if it works its a great time saver and aviods removing the clutch...

Personally I haven't, no but I'd probably go the same way. Last time I did a water pump on one the owner had tried and made a mess of getting the clutch off, so I had to sort the clutch and do it this way wouldn't have saved me any time.
Just make sure you get everything aligned, before you start doing it up.

ooooooh yessssssss.......water/oil pump back in......a bit fiddly and more suited to small hands but way better than removing the clutch :thumbup
GNASHER.....just two bolts holding the weter/oil pump assembly in place and one of the bolts has a dowel sleeve to help align everything,fits together really well...happy with that

That's what I was referring to when I said make sure it's all aligned before you do anything up
Glad you got it sorted, with the proper O ring in and providing you've assembled everything correctly, I think you'll find the leak will have gone mate.

sump gasket arrived today, good service again from WEMOTO :thumbup , i`ll be out in the garage early tomorrow to get this job finished...

Fork rebuild. New oil, new seals and probably paint/powder coat the lowers as they are pretty corroded.
Pattern rear disk. Existing one is quite worn for an 18k mile bike
Dual headlight mod. Easy job just havent got round to it yet.
New handlebars - probably Renthal but dont fancy drilling the slot for the switches (or grinding off the lug)
I am sure there will be more jobs by then though

all back together now and i`ve just come back from a 70ish mile test run, a few stops to check fluid levels etc and all`s good :thumbup , could do with a carb balance so that`s the next job ...

cheers MR ROBBO, used the mighty thou for work yesterday up to 145 miles now since putting it back together. no loss of coolant or oil :thumbup
bike looks as if its fixed its a shame i cant say the same about my riding, not really ridden since last year and i`am a bit rusty, hazzard spotting, road position and confidence have all gone out the window.....i need to get out more
