Re: Recommend me a bike. - noggythenog - 26-03-14

Hopefully off to a yam dealer on Saturday...a good 3 hour spin on the twisty welsh roads to get there first.
purchasing new tyres and while i wait have requested test rides on the FZ8, FZ1 & MT09 8)

Re: Recommend me a bike. - ogri48 - 26-03-14

Excellent, test riding is deffo the way forward. What's right for others may not be right for you. Hoping you will like the fz1, but think all the modern yams are gonna be good.... Smile

Re: Recommend me a bike. - stevierst - 26-03-14

Good stuff there noggy. Make sure you give them a damn good 'testing' ;D
And may the best bike for you win!

Re: Recommend me a bike. - noggythenog - 28-03-14

Well...no testing today......i. Braved wind, rain & sleet & kept going in the hope that the sun would appear.

Did it foc! Sad

But i did have about 2 hours of pissing about on the bikes in the showroom & have some initial conclusions....

Conclusion 1....the old FZS600 is a hard bike to beat.

Conclusion 2....My noggyfighter is even harder to beat.

Conclusion 3....as nice as im sure the FZ1 is....my legs are more cramped.

Conclusion 4....i prefer faired/half faired bikes when off the bike....but the nakeds when on them...it's a perception thing....i feel like i'm more a part of the bike with the nakeds...as if i have more weight over the front...with the fairings i feel further back on the bike so my brain tells me the pivot, so to speak is different.....in reality the fairings provide more weight on the front...but i cant help my perception...& it gives me confidence without one....& i've braved enough elements now to realise that if i need a fairing to be comfortable that i probably shouldn't be out in the first place.

Conclusion 5....as nice as the FZ8 is....my legs are more cramped.

Conclusion 6....FZ8 does feel heavy....so does the FZ1....but the FZ8 doesn't justify its weight with enough more grunt or BHP or Kudos as the FZ1.

Conclusion 7....MT09 is the Mazda MX5 of the bike world.

Conclusion 8....TDM900 has the perfect seating position..very comfy..but i still aint having one.

Conclusion 9....Brand new R1 is surprsingly more comfortable on the legs & arms (didn't say wrists) than the FZ8 & FZ1......i am surprised...ankle is bent backwards but in an easily kept position as opposed to being bent forwards awkwardly hovering above the lever with the fazers......shame i cant afford one & wouldn't want to be so low down.

Conclusion 10....they should create an upright bike with the pegs like the R1.

Conclusion 11....the tanks on the FZ8 & FZ1 are nicely shaped to support & splay the legs so that the weight can be transferred forwards...nice & wide...a splay is better than trying to tighten legs round a tank.

Conclusion 12....MT09 tank is not as nicely shaped as the FZ8 & FZ1......it is too physically small....the legs sit too low on the wrong part of the tank.....it isn't as easy to mould into the bike.

Conclusion 13....surprisingly MT09 is comfiest of the new stuff....legs are not cramped...probably equal to the noggyfighter (not better)......bars are similar width to my Renthals & the bike feels light....i could see myself having fun on this machine.

Conclusion 14....the MT09 Akropavich exhaust looks pretty shit....give it some old school treatment.

Conclusion 15....comfort & leg space is important to me...i shouldn't get carried away by power & handling at the expense of leg room because i could have all 3 if i find the right bike.

Conclusion 16....a sunny, dry day will provide more conclusions.

Noggy did you get a chance to sit on an MT-01 or an XJR1300? XJR is really comfortable, nice fat seat, upright neutral position and the tank is a lot wider than the Fazers. I would jack mine up and get wider handlebars though  :evil , not that I need one at the moment.

Ye i did...but i was getting sick of my own conclusions :lol ...xjr was real comfy...but leg room wasnt any better than the rest..plus being a big traditional beast it wont handle any better than a gen 1...prob worse....unfortunately no MT01's either.... I must see one...just for the crack...prob need to go to london for it though...heard they got more money than sense down that way so i should fit in nicely :b .

Oh & the XT660 had a comfy leg position...similar to the MT09..... & i was was on balls of my feet...quite liked it....a bit skinny & prob wont take skin off rice pudding but it was nice to sit on.

Re: Recommend me a bike. - stevierst - 29-03-14

You can get adjustable pegs for the fz1 which will make a decent enough difference.
Or........ and he says OR.......

Renthals on an R1. Did it to mine, and the bike was incredible for my 6'1" frame with 36" inside leg, and uber length arms.

Strangely enough though, the fz1 is slightly comfier to me than my old R1, but I'm not sure why. :Smile

Dont tempt me stevie....your bike pic is still in the forefront of my mind...but you had custom 125 front end or somethin.

But ye....a nicely damaged R1 with some renthals would do me nicely i reckon...reliability, comfort...foccin fast...what's not to like?

I tried same year r6 but it wasnt as comfy.

Wow, lot of replies to read, no time to read so apologies if been said.

A mate had street triple. He looked so fluid in corners..... But it's a tiny bike. Defo not for a tall guy.

How about something like the new mt-07 or mt-09?

Re: Recommend me a bike. - nick crisp - 29-03-14

Tuono

KTM 990 Super Duke

MT07

Think outside the box!
The first 2 will have all the power you need. MT07 may lack in that regard, but from what people are saying, it should be fun nevertheless.
Supermotos might fit the bill: more leg room, fun to ride - just not great distance bikes, but then, you're not looking for that are you?

The first 2 I think you should be able to get for reasonable money if you stay away from new/nearly new. (Don't forget original Tuonos were V2, latest is V4).

Maybe not the right bikes for you, but might lead you to consider/read about something different to IL4 UJM.

Have heard a few people say Speed Triples are boring. Street Triple will probably be physically too small.

R1?!! So from being worried about your license, you're now considering a bike that will rip it to shreds, and throw the pieces to the wind! Hell, why not?!  :b

Re: Recommend me a bike. - slimwilly - 29-03-14

OMG, that is a beautiful bike,,,i want it  :'(

Re: Recommend me a bike. - Lez72 - 29-03-14

Conclusion 17, If you are dead set on getting a new bike maybe you should think outside the box and maybe look further afield than what Yamaha have to offer as it seems you have concluded from the previous 16 conclusions that most of the Yamahas you have sat on so far are not right for you  Wink

For my next bike I have come to my conclusion number 1 that it needs to have some grunt and be comfortable. The way it looks is not going to be the priority. The ability to take me hundreds of miles in comfort is.

Besides, its not what you ride but the way that you ride it.

Nick, where did you find this photo?

This is the bike that inspired me to build my R1 years ago just as the gen2 came out, and I lost all details of it when I changed my PC.

Re: Recommend me a bike. - nick crisp - 29-03-14

Stole it from the Yanks FZ1 forum  Smile

Re: Recommend me a bike. - noggythenog - 29-03-14

Your bike must have been rare stevie...cant even find much on google about such conversions...

Nick's probably right...maybe R1 a bit too much speed than i need...easy to get carried away...i only sat on it because i had tried everything else....i really didn't expect it to be that comfy.

MT07 is kind of what im after...except maybe a little more trick....hence the MT09 is firmly in contention now asa bike  i could ride without modding straight away....the little MT07 could well be the next fazer 600 though....using similar technology as the TRX which i like...with grunt & fun within sensible limits for the road....it is more budget than the MT09 & i have my reservations that it would have suspension suited to my weight....MT09 didn't budge too much when i sat on it, felt substantially set up.

Im off to JT's motorbikes in swansea now to see what they can offer.

Then on the 13th i visit the devil............Honda! :evil :evil :evil

Re: Recommend me a bike. - Dave48 - 29-03-14

Noggy-If my memory serves me correct-JTs at Cwmbrla, Swansea have the 2 showrooms-one for Honda the other for all other makes inc 2nd hand but I haven't been there for a couple of years. Nice morning for a ride!

Re: Recommend me a bike. - Dave48 - 29-03-14

PS "Rhondda Red" came from JTs Bridgend! & reached me via 2nd owner in Bristol & 3rd owner in Ferndale,Rhondda so Welsh as they come ! and Red which is even better! :lol

Re: Recommend me a bike. - fazersharp - 29-03-14

Quote:Supermotos might fit the bill: more leg room

Never sat on one but to me ive always thought that they look sort of cramped, is that why supermoto riders always stick their leg out when going around a corner

Re: Recommend me a bike. - ChristoT - 29-03-14

I saw a lad having a blast on what looked like a CBR500 yesterday - seemed to be handling pretty well!
