Well, you’ll certainly be dancing for joy at the results of your Ivanising project, when you can get around to doing it. Did you make a start on the Chrysler this weekend?.

Haven't started that yet. I have however, welded and beefed up my ramp extenders ready for the up and coming car servicing season.
Then the welder broke - it's not been brilliant for a while, the overtemp thingy would keep popping and the sheath in the hose (MIG) is broken and would snag the wire feed. The damn things only 30 Years old!
So that went in the bin and I bought a new welder this morning. I feel better - this retail therapy has something going for it  :lol

Mate, I've got a loyalty card at Machine Mart, Amazon etc etc......

Re: Whoever posts last is best - robbo - 29-01-22

Wish I could get a Halfords trade card. Their tool range is more than acceptable, with a lifetime guarantee, and good savings can be had with the card. Mind you, I expect the Snap On van knows it’s own way to your house :lol .

Haha lol. I haven't seen inside a Snap-On for about 12 Years. (That's saying something for the quality!)

Re: Whoever posts last is best - robbo - 30-01-22

The last Snap On van I was in was in 2001 in Key West Florida, when I bought a T handled ratchet screwdriver, from America's southernmost Snap On man :lol . Still going strong.  :thumbup .

The quality is not so good nowadays - I heard that Snap-On went around buying up tool manufacturers, putting their label on the tools etc, however the quality is not as good as it should be for the price paid.
And then there's the battle with the vans regarding warranty. Some of the dealers don't want to know. They just want to sell, sell and sell some more.

Re: Whoever posts last is best - robbo - 31-01-22

I suppose in general the quality of long established products starts to tail off when the bean counters get involved. The tool choices at very reasonable prices, aimed mainly at the diyer are numerous nowadays, and some of them possibly are sold under Snap ON’s Blue Point banner, if they still have that range. I should imagine having needed top notch reliable tools in a professional capacity, you’ve noticed first hand, the decline in quality and longevity of a range of tool items besides Snap On. Nothing’s made to last I suppose, sadly.

Re: Whoever posts last is best - fazerscotty - 31-01-22

I'm pretty lucky in that I'm not using the tools as much as I used too - so having spent out earlier in my career, I can now relax in the knowledge that what I have, will more than likely see me through. Any new kit is generally sourced from whoever has it in stock. I even have an Aldi set of metric stubby spanners. Not going to get used very often, so I made that choice to save a few quid. (They are actually quite good!)
I've got spanners & sockets etc in metric, A/F, B.S.F./Whitworth & B.A. Had them for 30+ years and yes, they still get used. I suppose the majority of any new tool purchases are the specialist stuff for the cars Fazer  :lol . Although, I have just spent best part of £100 on a crankshaft seal tool for a Lycoming aircraft engine!

I only bought my first JIS screwdriver set a couple of years ago - who'd of thought I needed more screwdrivers  :rollin :rollin :rollin

Re: Whoever posts last is best - robbo - 31-01-22

I too only bought my first set of JIS screwdrivers within the last 5 years, adding some 1/4" drive JIS bits for the Snap On ratchet driver. All those years of moaning about chocolate Japanese phillips headed screws, when all that was needed was the proper screwdriver :lol . Aldi, Lidl and tool firms like Bergen all do a good job at diy level and beyond in some cases. Sadly all my Whit, AF, BSF and BA, are now confined to a large metal toolbox under the workbench. No doubt destined for the scrapyard when I'm pushing up daisies :lol .

Get rid of them at either an Autojumble or a car boot. There's always someone with a spanner fetish looking around!

Re: Whoever posts last is best - robbo - 01-02-22

Happy birthday young’un :thumbup

Re: Whoever posts last is best - agricola - 01-02-22

All my old imperial stuff went to the tip, just taking up room in the tool boxes and never likely to be used by me again. Interestingly, an old work pal donated his to one of those railway restoration places and they were well received. I wish Id done something similar now

That's a good idea - hadn't thought about that. There are several aircraft restoration things going on near me. If I remember  :lol  I'll see if their interested.

Re: Whoever posts last is best - robbo - 02-02-22

I had thought of Amberley Museum, which has a lot of transport and mechanical engineering exhibits. I often pass by on rides, last Sunday in fact. However it's £12 to get in, so will give that a miss. A motorbike based jumble, like Kempton Park, is no doubt the answer.

Re: Whoever posts last is best - fazerscotty - 03-02-22

I wandered around an autojumble on Sunday and some of the tools they were trying to sell - Jeez.
A lot were broken or missing parts and they still wanted stupid money for them.
An awful lot of old codgers looking at them though.
I think that when my time comes - the younger generation won't know what a tool is  :eek  or what to do with it  :lol :lol

I think you're right. The way things are moving, you wont be allowed to alter/modify/adjust etc anything on bikes or motor cars. It will all be sealed units, have to be taken to dealers, replacement parts having to be programmed in to be accepted by the vehicle. Mechanics will become parts changers rather than fault finding and rectifying. I saw this starting in the few years before I retired from work, service engineers were just swapping parts until faults disappeared.

With the advent of EVs, I think most major components will simply be "plug and play".

Re: Whoever posts last is best - robbo - 03-02-22

It'll be plug'n'play that's for sure. A shimano electric mountain bike motor has no available parts, and by all accounts last about 2 years if used fairly regularly. So that'll be £600, thanks very much :eek .
