Re: what did you do with your fazer today ? - mickvp - 17-04-17

Washed all the schmoo off the bike that it got on it yesterday. Then lubed up all the pegs and side stand as they were starting to get a bit crunchy.

New pads ordered for to fit later in the week Smile

Re: what did you do with your fazer today ? - slappy - 23-04-17

Changed oil and filter, boring but necessary.

Cracking day out!

Monday, I realised the back brake wasn’t going to get through the imminent MOT. In fact, I was surprised it passed last year, So I dismantled it, cleaned the corrosion out of the grooves and replaced the seals.
It was a bastard of a job to get the pistons back in as the dust seal kept trying to roll over and jam.

Perhaps a suitable thickness washer would have allowed the pads to rest on the other side of the securing pins rather than in the deep trench they’d ground themselves, but I’d already gone to the expense of buying new ones.

Today, MOT day, I made the mistake of washing the bike before heading off to the test. The bike hates this and runs on 2 or 3 cylinders for the next 30 miles… at one point I wasn’t even sure it would get there.
Anyway, it scraped a pass: noisy exhaust, chain needs replacing and steering head bearings are slightly loose… poor show, but I’ve only had time to ride it rather than maintain it over the past year. Hopefully I’ll get the two important advisories attended to this weekend.

Fitted a HP steering damper... Had to get a new torque wrench with low settings, 5nm lowest for one bolt!
Instructions for fitting had to be read a zillion times  :rollin
Why do they insist on gold parts  :'(

Edit** just noticed the left securing point for the damper is fitted wrong.... Spacer and O ring should be below the gold part  :lol

Where did you get the low torque wrench from?

Got it from eBay, was quick delivery and it meant I did not have to go into town!
It's a Bergen, cheap enough and certified. It did not make a mess of the rubber O rings so I'm happy  :lol

Re: what did you do with your fazer today ? - nick crisp - 29-04-17

I've finally taken the plunge, and allowed myself to be dragged a bit further into the modern age  :eek  Bought a Garmin sat nav and bluetooth headset; loomed in the nav wiring today and fitted the headset to the helmet. Just got to pair everything up then go have a play to make sure I know what I'm doing with it. I only really want it to help find booked hotels and sort myself out if (when  :rolleyes ) I get lost, and the 'find fuel' thing might be handy; I'll still be using maps for actual exploring of certain areas I think. Bike has been serviced and had new tyres fitted. Just got to sort insurance, breakdown cover and get an MOT for it, and I'm all set for Spain at the end of next month  Big Grin

Took the swingarm and suspension off to replace the chain (endless), lube the linkages and replace the shock.
Also checked front sprocket alignment with the rear as I was a bit concerned about the wear rate on the inside edge of the sprocket… turned out to be spot on, so I guess the chain itself was the issue. Maybe not surprising since it’s done 54,000 miles.
Sadly, ran out of daylight thanks to the time it took to get things clean so will have to complete the job tomorrow.

54,000 miles from a chain? Bloody hell you must have looked after that. What replacement shock are you fitting?

Re: what did you do with your fazer today ? - Fazerider - 30-04-17

The Scottoiler and lots of average speed cameras on my commute does wonders for chain life... though it was on its last legs.
The shock is kebab19's R6 mod... had the parts for ages, just haven't had the time to fit it 'til now.

Hedgetrimmer - have a look at MyRoute. Combines maps with Garmin/TomTom. Best of both worlds.

Someone told me that trying to use other route planning/map systems with Garmin, rather than Garmin's own system, can be a proper pain.

What I like about the Michelin maps is that scenic routes are highlighted, and it tells you which are toll routes. For example, whilst researching routes for my trip, it seems lots of people headed for the Picos just let sat nav and maps sites choose their route for them, but if you look at the Michelin maps, they show a more scenic coastal route that stays off of motorways and main roads, that I wouldn't have known about had I used 'tech' systems to plan.

Re: what did you do with your fazer today ? - unfazed - 07-05-17

Not today but last Friday night. Over the last 2 weeks I Had issues with a bit of hesitation/surging low in the rev range on the replacement carbs (replaced due to a sticking shaft between carbs 1 and 2) and was getting progressively worse  Decide to change the TPS as these were the classic symptoms of a dodgy TPS.
Pulled out my old Carbs yesterday from the spares press removed the TPS and replaced the one currently on the bike with it.
The one on my old carbs was a modified DR400 Suzuki one.
What a difference, running like a clock while marshaling a charity cycle run yesterday :woot

New boots for mine yesterday

Re: what did you do with your fazer today ? - robbo - 07-05-17

What did you go for Mel?.Will renew mine this month.

Re: what did you do with your fazer today ? - Dudeofrude - 09-05-17

Finally removed my front sprocket cover. Found out I have a 15t front sprocket and that my speedohealer has been set wrong the entire time I've had the bike!! It was set at -16.7 when it should have been -10.8 so not sure if that means it was reading fast or slow but seeing asome it affects the odometer too I was guess that's why it seems like I don't get many miles to a tank of fuel? I may have been getting more than I thought?
