Before you put new coolant back in after getting things sorted i would seriously advise using some RadFlush to give the internals a good clean up.

We don't have that over here  :rollin
I'll try to find some alternative.

i have read an aluminium safe descaler has been used to good effect, dishwasher and washing machine descaler is the same stuff
but i really mean it has to be ALUMINIUM SAFE - if you know anyone that works in the kitchen / food prep industry they might be able to get there hands on it

shame the pipes have gone that way

i want to be out riding  in this sun aswell but im rebuilding my entire rear end and just got sent the wrong bolts and still waiting for a new brake disc (that was my fault as i bent it by dropping an engine hoist on it  :wall )

You can give the engine a good flush using a garden hose. Just take two pipes off and stick the hose in and give it a flush until the water runs clear, then put the hose in the other end to reverse the direction of flow and flush it out the other way. You disconnect the radiator and do it separately. I also took my radiator off and blocked the inlet and outlet and then stuck it in a basin of water and let it soak for an hour to rise dirt out of the fins

Great ideas, thanks!

It might be a good idea to take the water pump cover off as well and check that the pump is ok and that there's no crud built up

Update:
For now the problem is solved, I've found some replacement pipes from a local guy here and installed them.
They're used but in good shape.
Cleaned the system 3 times, a lot of rust got out.
For now it's not leaking, we'll see in the future.
