Re: Advice on buying this Fazer? - Dave48 - 09-01-17

Just a few points to consider: This appears to be a "standard" bike-ie no extras/upgrades fitted by previous owners. Its 16 years old and probably running original suspension/rubber brake hoses. Mileage isnt a problem but how many previous owners & why the absence of service history? Without this you would be wise to assume nothing & start servicing from scratch. Your £300 budget wont stretch very far even if you do your own work.
There are plenty of  FZS 1000s out there with full service history-often one/two owner bikes with a "paper trail" included but the price will reflect this. If I was buying another one i would be looking at those around the £2500 mark with FSH.
If your budget is £1500 + £300 I would consider a really well cared for Foxeye FZS 600
You can have plenty of fun on either bike-the only real difference is power & weight. Quite a few on here own or have owned both.
if you cant stretch your budget my money is on the 600. Dont rush into something that could become a money pit. Theres a bike out there perfect for you!

If you've got £1800 to spend then there is a 2005 Black Gen 1 on ebay. £1750, fully Ivanised, heated grips, etc. Seller needs a quick sale to buy a van.

Re: Advice on buying this Fazer? - robbo - 09-01-17

There's a blue one on ebay £1500, 46k miles 2001.

Re: Advice on buying this Fazer? - AyJay - 09-01-17

I picked up a 2002 FZS1000 for £1500 last year. 32k miles. It was a dealer who'd taken it as trade in didn't want the hassle of bringing it up to resale condition because the silver engine paint was getting a bit flakey and the EXUP was rattly.  Apart from that it had mint bodywork and was in otherwise great condition. Discs, suspension, forks, chain, all the expensive stuff was A1. Even the tyres had a few thousand left in them.

If you're prepared to put some work into a bike like that, you can achieve your dreams. My older Fazer's now done an interstellar mileage, so that's not an issue.

One thing though, some 2001 bikes do have a manufacturing fault on the 2nd gear dog which on the part catalogues shows as an having an updated part. Just like early R1s in fact. It is essential to get a test ride and see if it pops out of 2nd gear. The safest thing to do is though is go for a 2002 onwards machine.

If you've got the time, ring as many dealers as you can and see if they have a trade in that they don't want to put in the showroom. You might get lucky like I did.

Good luck.

Yes, indeed. They've got some great looking / condition bikes but they are strongly priced. Took mine out around the block today for the first run out in ages, just to get the fuel flowing. Came back smiling as usual.  :lol

I'll pm you the address. If you send it to the wife, she can file it with the others that she's awarded me over the years, for stating the bleeding obvious, master of sarcasm, being an irritating bas****, in fact, I think she may have already awarded me one for Understatement??????

Oh no, my mistake, that one was for Under achievement.  Smile

Re: Advice on buying this Fazer? - tommyardin - 11-01-17

Reading through this post make me smile. I have never owned a Gen1 Thou but would dearly love to, and who knows maybe I will if the right one comes along.

Talking about and comparing the Gen1 Thou with the FZS 600 seems daft as they are completely different bikes, by goodness knows how many BHP.

Sure! The 1 K will get to 120 quicker than the 600 but certainly wont stop any quicker, same front brakes and the 600 is lighter.
I know the 600 tops out a little over 140 MPH and I'm sure the Gen1 will go on for another 30MPH maybe more, but how many times a week do use our bikes full potential? I rarely go over 120MPH and even then I don't do that very often maybe once a month (If you are a policeman reading this its called fiction) so do I need another 50 MPH on top of that?
OF COURSE I DO, but anyone who thinks the FZS 600 is a poor relative to the Gen1 should really think again cos its not, it's certainly different but the FZS600 is a brilliant piece of machinery that has plenty of power, 0-60 in less than 4 seconds top end of 140-145MPH, it has an engine that has proved itself over many thousands of miles both in the Thundercat form and the FZS Fazer 600 form, really do I need any more. (See text in red).

The FZS600 is a bike that wants to please its owner and tries it's very best to do so, and to be honest is not found wanting.

Shame about the shite suspension though, but, that is curable with the R6 shock, or other independent manufacturers shocks. plus better springs up front.
Love my Baby FZS  :kiss

Re: Advice on buying this Fazer? - tommyardin - 11-01-17

Oh! But I also love the look of the Gen1  :kiss  And enjoy reading the 1K posts

Does this look to bad? OK the silver paint on the engine looks a bit tat but that is fixable, I thought the bike itself looked OK for the price. Would defo give it a full service inc coolant, all filters, Air, Fuel, Oil and of course oil, also change and plugs and most likely replenish the brake fluid fore and aft as well. Nice project for the winter, shit I feel I'm talking myself into something here.  :rolleyes

Hey! I just noticed that Ash has gone very quiet did he buy the red 1K or not

Re: Advice on buying this Fazer? - nick crisp - 11-01-17

Tommy, I've ridden the 600 fairly extensively, when one of my previous thous went in for some repairs, and I was pretty impressed. No need to feel inadequate! But I've been used to a lot of bigger capacity bikes, and I know I'd miss that extra oomph if I didn't have it. In fact, sometimes I do when I'm out on the Striple, even though that thing is a hoot.
Horses for courses mate, tis all it is.

I could not agree more, hence my lusting after a Gen1 Thou.
I would have to convince her indoors about that though, you see I am a retired old foccer and she is still a hard working school teacher, in other words I am not the bread winner anymore, so of course she should be considered. Especially as I have just spent very close to £600 on the suspension on the baby 600.
The 600 will not ever be sold by me, it is a keeper.
Don't get me wrong if I really wanted a Gen1 I know she would say OK, but I have the 600, I also have my MR2 Spider and my Vauxhall Combo van and she drives around in a scabby old 2003 regd Pug 206 1400 that she refuses to get rid of because it keeps going. I think I might be biting the hand that ................... Big Grin

She cuts me a lot of slack  Big Grin  so she is a keeper as well

Wow, just seen this myself. Looks ideal for my budget and I'm not far from London in North Essex.

Do you think its one to avoid going by your comment on it? Price seems a bit too good to be true I thought for a 2005 model. Would be interested to see what people think of that as otherwise colour me interested!

Re: Advice on buying this Fazer? - Grayo - 13-01-17

I don't think it's one to avoid. If it's what you're looking for and it's within your budget then I would at least go and have a look at it. There are still bargains around and this could be one of them.
