I reckon it'll be more than just the one thing responsible though, it needs a good going over either way, because even with throttle applied it still sounded rough in running.
Once it's sorted it'll be like riding a new bike.

Thinking about it, it might be that the loud cylinder is pinking.
Take a look at the plugs, there may be one that looks as if it's running lean.
Either way, it's probably worth checking the adjustment on the slow-running mixture screws.

start with the simple things. adjust the idle speed to the right figure and then if something is still not right dig deeper.

Sounds just like a rattly old Fazer 600 FZS clutch to me, mine has a rattle that almost disappears when the clutch lever in pulling in.
I spoke to my mechanic about it and was told its absolutely fine they nearly all have a rattle/knocking noise.
He (Darron) my mechanic had previously replaced the basket on his FZS Boxeye along with the centre hub, plain and friction plates and all associated springs and screws to no avail as the clutch still had a rattle albeit a little less than before, but, 18 months down the line it was rattling at the same volume as it was before the very expensive replacement.

I have had my 2003 Foxeye for over three years now and the rattle has not changed in all that time, I have done about 9K in that time.
Bike now has 34.5K miles on the clock.

I found the cheapest way to stop it is a pair of soft foam earplugs, it also has the bonus of reduced wind noise. :thumbup

I think it's possible that the recording has amplified the sound (Recorder right up against the engine) and at what volume is it playing at also? exaggerates the whole thing. mine sounds exactly the same but at much lower volume.
Bit like a stethoscope up against your chest so the doctor can hear your breathing.

My personal opinion is that is still clutch rattle/clatter.

Got a mate with a carb balancer and he is handy with a spanner. I altered the revs to just over 1000 and its already made a difference.

The Fazer manual is a godsend although it does identify the wrong water coolant drain bolt!

Thanks very one for your help, I will post another recording once the carbs have been done.

Still too low, put it up to 1200rpm.

Re: Clanking noise - BBROWN1664 - 01-08-16

Feccin hell, I guessed it was low idle speed.

Shappaeye - the idle speed should be about 1350rpm. Anything lower and it will hunt and struggle to keep going and end up sounding like a bag of spanners. Get the idle speed right and it will probably be OK.

Re: Clanking noise - darrsi - 01-08-16

Mine would sound like the throttle's being used at 1350rpm!
