I used box section rather than tubing, and toyed with the idea of using support struts going from the rear of the rack down at 45 degrees to the swivel bungee rings below the tail light. You could pretty much load it up with anything then without fear of breakage. (had a Renntec fail on me too!) The one I made for my Thundercat uses this, and I load it up with a Hell of a lot of kit!

I be just had a look, but I've deleted the pictures of the mock up I did for it.

Worth a thought for your next design.

CCrikey you sound like a pirate. :lol

I knew my top box was staying put so instead of using the proper Givi rack plate, i got some metal pates made up for inside and outside the box which allowed me to have the box a bit further back for pillion comfort, rather than to actually lean on.
I refuse to let any pillion hold on to me because if you need to do an emergency stop or they're not paying attention then they just end up constantly nutting you, so the original grab rail is easily accessible.
One of the best add ons though is that rubber matting you can see in the photo's, it totally plants a passenger in one place, they simply don't move or slide at all, it's a cheap but very effective bit of kit.

my backrest/rack has a couple of handles for my wife to hold onto.the honda ones she can't grip to well with having arthritis in both wrist.
I could if needed add this to back rest etc.
once I've got the jig made and set up I can virtually build what you guys want.

Its good to see someone putting effort into something so important for people

Re: racks/backrest etc - johnakay - 06-03-15

has any one got a original damage grab rail that they don't want?
maybe I can make a rack and back rest or both that you can still use your original grab rail.
