Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - red98 - 17-02-14 Straight out to the garage after work today, another 3 nuts off no problem.that just leaves the middle two.....startwith the top one.not budging.break out the angle grinder and cut a slot down the side of the nut , find an old imperial socket that fits and it comes off a treat ![]() ![]() Front of ghe engine is in a right old state...seen a few winters I recon.......its a silver engine not black :eek Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - dickturpin - 17-02-14 I reckon you're feeling quite pleased with yourself now! Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - noggythenog - 17-02-14 :woot :woot :woot :woot :woot :thumbup Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - red98 - 17-02-14 Sorry chaps...I post the pictures from my phone and thd text from my tablet.hence the delay......yeh pretty pleased, could have been a lot worse....polishing the downpipes next, will sneak out to the garage before work in the morning and soak the engine with gunk....give it all day to work its magic ![]() Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - red98 - 18-02-14 Bit more progress tonight......going to repair the broken stud....found a long 6mm nut at thd bottom of my tool box, bored out to 7mm and ran a 8mm tap through, then wound it onto a 8mm stud and locked it with another nut.ground it round to 9mm od on the bench grinder.this fits on whats left of the stud.so I now have a female thread ready to accept the new stud.wii have to open up the clamp hole by 1mm to take the new fitting, also made a spacer which fits over the fitting between the clamp and nut, this will give me extra thread that I need as the old stud is not threaded all the way down....I will trim this spacer down at final fitting for neatness.......hope the pictures explain the repair better than the text :rolle Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - red98 - 18-02-14 Had a bit of a cleaning session aswell...engine responded well to a good dose of gunk and I also had a go at the downpipes with some brasso ![]() Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - noggythenog - 18-02-14 Tidy job Red, just what i used....brasso & elbow grease & no gimmicks.....& it really works 8) Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - red98 - 18-02-14 Hi nog...pictures make them look better than they are......more time needed ![]() Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - fireblake - 18-02-14 Damn. I was hoping to bring my bike to yours so you could show (do) mine Mickey Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - Dead Eye - 18-02-14 Certainly an inventive fix... I would probably have attempt to remove the stud and made more of a mess ![]() Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - red98 - 19-02-14 going to leave the engine painting untill the warmer weather comes, then i`ll probs drill the stud out and fit stainless studs and nuts.....this fix took minutes and was easy to do,my mot is due so going to sort that first as dont want the bike off the road with better weather just around the corner ![]() Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - red98 - 19-02-14 Bit slow at work today so took my downpipes in and finished polishing them up.....pipes back on the bike, second picture shows whats visable of my stud repair.....happy with that ![]() Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - solorider - 21-02-14 Mine were that bad there was no way that they were going to come out of the ports without a bit of persuasion, like a disc cutter and a lump hammer. Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - red98 - 21-02-14 you did well getting them off without breaking any studs......mine were stuck in the ports aswell, took about 20 mins to free off........i wonder if this is going to be a problem with the thou.....unlike the 600 the tops of the downpipes are well hidden behind the radiator,no need to remove the rad on the 600`s to get them off... Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - solorider - 21-02-14 when I replaced my studs I bought mine from a Vauxhall dealer, they were nearly half the price of Yamaha ones and the same size, I bought some stainless steel dome head nuts off eBay so the water cannot get into the end of the studs again, here is a pic of the top of my downpipes ![]() and here is a pic of the "new" set of downpipes with the nuts, ![]() Re: exhaust downpipes yes or no ? - lincs1963 - 24-02-14 Dunno if I've mentioned this before but the finest penetrating fluid known to man is a 50/50 mix of ATF and thinners or white spirit. Just thought I would mention it. |
