Re: Dedicated "off" thread - Lawrence - 03-01-14

Sounds like that one could've turned out a lot worse Nick :o

Mine was relatively tame is comparison, I was in the left (bus) lane of a four lane road (Mile End road, outside the Genesis cinema for any Londoners here) and a car coming the other way turned through the stationary traffic in lane 2 and hit me square in the side. Bike landed on my leg and I reckon I was lucky it wasn't broken, just twisted my ankle badly. On the plus side my leg being in the way saved any more damage to the bike. Got away with a (even more) broken fairing and snapped brake lever on the bike and a very bruised leg and twisted ankle that took 6 months to be 100% again.

Re: Dedicated "off" thread - dazza - 03-01-14

Thought I'd share my little off..... Whilst acting as an outrider on patrol we had a well organized contact from three separate positions. I could hear the zip, zip of rounds and when I started to feel the air displacement realized I was being targeted and they were starting to find there range.  Just at that moment I hit a pothole and preceded to veer into the river. As I lay under water with the bike laying on my legs,  lungs about to burst I had a brain wave.  I ripped off the rubber fuel overflow pipe on the tank and put it in my mouth. It was just long enough to allow me to breathe. This bought me enough time to free my legs but when I raised my head above the river bank I immediately came under fire.  I was well and truly  pinned down. I went back into the water thinking I would drift downstream out of harm's way when I suddenly realised that all the commotion had attracted the attention of some rather large crocodiles. It was then I remembered that I had shit loads of chappie in my ration pack as the beef curry and dry biscuits kept repeating on me. So, I opened a couple of tins with the intention of hopefully diverting the crocodiles attention but as soon as I smelt that meaty aroma I just had to tuck in. I think this saved my life as the crocodiles seemed to look at me with disgust and disbelief and fucked off up the river. Sorry lads,  got bored at work and it took so long to tap all this shit into my phone didn't have the heart to delete it.

Never trust a green light
Never trust an indicator
Assume that they haven't seen you
That car WILL pull out

Any others ?

Also I like to find a quieter roundabout that is safe to practice going faster and faster and lower and lower and find that when its needed I have the confidence of knowing the bike can go low on that "overcooked bend" its only good enough for right handers you might say but don't forget that the roundabout will always have a left hander exit where you can practice lefts the same.

Just seen that copper picture  :rollin it looks like hes doing a frank spencer "ooooh"

You talking about green lights, there's a crossroad junction not far from my work that i normally filter to the front of, and the record i've counted so far is seven cars jumping the red light.
I see six quite often, and i'm talking about full on red lights, not amber, before i start counting.
So yes, don't trust a green light at all, you still need to look everywhere at any junction because there are plenty of careless arseholes out there that can really spoil your day!

Re: Dedicated "off" thread - mtread - 12-01-14

My biggy.
Friday 13th Sept 1999. Riding my Bandit (yes I know) back from badminton in the twilight. Pulled into the right filter lane ready to turn right into a side road. Suddenly headlights in my offside mirror, I'm being overtaken! Wallop, get hit at speed from behind, me and bike do somersaults. I land on the ground, bike lands next to me with a jet of oil coming out of the engine casing.
I crawl to the kerb, leg a bleeding mess but otherwise all in one piece. Bike in a terrible state. Traffic all stops and a police car pulls up to check I'm OK and tells me I've been hit by some joyriders being chased by the police.
So there I am sitting on the kerb with everybody fussing around me when I see a fat copper chasing two yoofs back my way. He can only catch one, so I cross the road and stand in the other one's way. I've still got my armoured jacket and gloves on. He tries a karate kick but his chin meets the front of my glove. Down he goes and I kneel on his back until the meat wagon arrives and they throw him in the back.
Result - Bandit written off, bruises and bleeding but compensation, 9 months at Her Majesty's pleasure for the perpetrator
Lessons learned - Sometimes there's just nothing you can do about it. Don't let the bastards get away with it. When your Bandit's written off, buy a Fazer  Smile

I didn't punch him in the face officer, he ran into me, and then I restrained him. As my statement made clear  :rolleyes I held him face down in the mud, and one of the policewomen suggested he couldn't breath properly, so I carefully twisted his head to one side... It's amazing what adrenaline can achieve.
You're right, no insurance, but a good solicitor and a claim through the Motor Insurance Bureau, which is that premium we all pay a little bit of to cover the uninsured.
I was very, very lucky. Oh and I think I won at badminton 15-13 ............
