Re: Luggage options - Lazarus - 19-07-13

what exactly are you going to use the luggage system for?

is it going to be a daily (commuting) carrying piles of stuff around, or is it for the occasional trip (1 / 2 days away)

when I went to the NW - i "borrowed" an oxford Tailpack (already mentioned in earlier post) which straps to the pillion seat. also had a knox backpack that I bungeed to the rack on the back.

for a 4 day trip it had plenty of storage for everything needed.

PITA loading/unloading if used regularly, but maybe a cheaper alternative to fixed hard luggage setup,

Quote:From memory, the FZS specific fitting kit is (was?) around £80, a Wingrack2 around £150, a top plate £45, all new.

So that's ~£275 without the boxes. Sounds like £550 -- £600 is about right with boxes.

I got the Yamaha dealer to get me a quote from Givi and they said they couldn't supply a fitting kit for my bike. You're right, it might be worth calling them again and asking about the universal fitting kit.

Quote:what exactly are you going to use the luggage system for?

The biggest use would be when my girlfriend and I go on biking holidays. Up until now, I've been strapping a bag to the pillion seat and wearing a backpack. It's adequate but inconvenient. I'd much rather have my luggage in hard panniers and have an empty topbox for us both to put our helmets in when we stop for a break. (a topbox wouldn't suit her dragstar).

Strictly speaking, it's totally unnecessary but by that logic, so is the entire bike. Smile

Re: Luggage options - kebab19 - 27-07-13

As it doesn't look like I'll be touring anytime soon, I *might* consider selling my Wingrack2, FZS600 - specific fitting kit, M3 top plate & 2000 onwards model footrest hangers that you need to fit the rack to.

PM me your best offer if interested ;-)

Re: Luggage options - lds1973 - 27-07-13

I've got a 37litre top box on a renntec rock, so far so good but there's nothing heavy in it just shorts and trainers for when we stop and the odd bag of shopping. I've got soft panniers for heavier stuff as they sit lower and closer to the middle. Tank bag for valuables/map. That seems a popular set up for a reason.

I think its been said here that if two of you are needing more than (37+ 20x2 +20) is 100l then you are taking too much.

I did Germany for a week solo with another guy with soft tail pack, 1/2 tent and a bum bag. I still brought stuff home unused.

Tbh though I've seen guys with nakered 250 's and the like with normal head sports bags bungeed to the back seat and it works for them.

The Renntec racks have an official 2.5kg maximum weight limit on them, i think my sandwiches weighed more than that as my top box flew past me giving me the finger after it snapped in half  :finger

Re: Luggage options - lds1973 - 27-07-13

You would think a pillion holding on to a renntec rack would put on more force than 2.5kg wouldn't you.

2 and half bags of sugar ain't much is it and I'm sure everybody who has one puts more than that on.

When yours overtook you darrsi what was on it?

Re: Luggage options - darrsi - 27-07-13

I had a top box on it........i read about the 2.5kg thing afterwards  :lol

Oh i dunno, was a few years back, i've nearly always got wet proofs, different types of gloves, anvil, bike manual, the usual stuff in the box.........

Re: Luggage options - nick crisp - 27-07-13

Pictures of my Fazer with a wingrack on it - I did spend a lot of time trying to find kit for Fazer, ended up getting it shipped from Poland (together with amazing polish Mottowear Combat kevlar jeans). It was quite easy to fit (although it took me most of a day). Looks are subjective - because of a show I watched as a kid I like the look of a motorcycle with luggage.
I've got E21 panniers - they are great for shopping etc, and you can still filter with them on, and E41 - bought them for our Eurotrip (we're setting off next Friday).

Givi is bloody expensive - but if you get a chance of getting Wingrack kit for your bike - go for it.

Re: Luggage options - cfoley - 28-07-13

Does the polish company have a website?

Sure, it's a shop - by some miracle they still had the wingrack kit in stock few years back -

http://www.4bikes.pl/

Google translate might come in handy  Wink

I've checked and it seems that they don't have the Givi adaptor kit anymore, but they have Kappa's kit http://4bikes.pl/kappa-k8342-mocowanie-wingracka-yamaha-fzs-600-fazer-0003-p-6973.html seems to be the same thing, but it's for 00 - 03 models.

Re: Luggage options - Dave48 - 28-07-13

I think even the Givi boxes fitted to their official mounting racks/plates have a fairly low "maximum weight" limit. Previously I have toured two up for a week with my partner using the 45Litre top box & I had a Givi "Double Decker" tank bag for my stuff. We had a small amount of underseat storage for tools, gaffer tape,tie-wraps & first aid kit.
the advantages of hard luggage are that you can leave boxes securely attached to bike when unattended, quickly remove boxes on arrival @ wherever youre stsaying & they are pretty waterproof-better with the dedicated inner waterproof liner bags.
Soft luggage can be useful also. I have the Givi tank bag which comesin two sections -can use base bag or zip two together for more storage. Also have a Hein-Gericke  large soft bag that can be used as tank bag or strapped to rear carrier(Renntec or Givi platform).
The main thing is to learn to travel light-use miniature toiletry containers etc. I used to lay everything I thought I would need out on the kitchen table but by being ruthless managed to reduce to what was essential.  Load distribution I important on a bike-too much weight @ the back will make youre front end very light with a tendency to go airborne! apart from the risk of breaking the box mounts. Givi is expensive gear but theres a saying " Buy the best-pay once" or words to that effect? Properly equipped & packed-touring is really great fun-and you don't need a Gold Wing type trailer either! :lol

Re: Luggage options - ajmes1 - 30-07-13

through lots and lots of browsing, I found this site here:
http://www.shad.es/es/shad-world/productos/fijaciones/yamaha/fazer-600/2002/c12mar2mod2mot643/

It's a company called Shad who still manufacture  a hard luggage set for a fzs600. It looks like a spanish company, so Google translate will be needed (again).

From the fitting instructions it isn't clear how the panniers attach, but the shops getgeared stock Shad panniers.

Does anyone have any experience of them? The fitting kits and the panniers are about £80 each. Might have to go look at them in the store to see how they attach and whether they could be adapted to use GIVI luggage.

Re: Luggage options - choppaholic - 30-07-13

Shad is a very decent brand in luggage, in the UK as far as i know is distributed by Oxford i could be wrong but its in their catalogue for this season. the Shad SH43 panniers should fit.

this guy on ebay has the rack and panniers in his shop

there is also SW motech which you can use Givi mounts and  luggage which still make luggage for FZS600

http://www.motorbikesandparts.co.uk/sw-motech-quicklock-removable-pannier-rack-yamaha-fzs600-fazer-1.html

there is also Krauser which you can still get but fairly expensive.

i have been searching the net to get luggage for mine, after a lot of forum and ebay searching just managed to buy a givi wingrack 2 and fitting kit
