Ok, carb cleaned (although couldn't see any varnishing or blockages). The brake switch is ok because as soon as I let go of the brake it stops cranking the engine. Will reinstall the carb once the battery is charged again, am trying to keep it full between starting attempts so it doesn't drop too low.

ok, fired it up just now and it started straight away then died within seconds. kick starting will run it for about half a second before it cuts out again.

monged it. the drain screw was still loose from the rebuild. it's finally started!

You did  not mention is it 2 stroke or 4 stroke scooter, but still i think you should clean the carb and chage the oil.

It's a 4 stroke, cleaned the carb and thats what got it going for a bit, but after it was left to cool and started the next day it had died again Sad
