Grahamm, in this context 'permanently' means from now until you next change it. Not ticking it is a way of quickly checking out a different theme. If Permanently is not ticked then the theme will, as you say, go back to what it was before.

Ah well, what I have found is a way of not using the annoying Xmas theme that screws up the page layout
