It's worse than starting sentences with 'so' - notice how many (answering questions as well!) start with 'okay, so'...

Yeah, It used to be the same with "basically" you'd talk to someone and basically they'd be basically talking basically in riddles basically.

French fisherman intimidating and ramming UK fleet that's fishing perfectly legally.

Typical shoddy behaviour.

Except that the French are not allowed to harvest these stocks at this time of year, in their own waters, in order to preserve the stocks.
The law doesn’t apply to British vessels so they sail into French waters and hoover up the stocks.
So yeah, one can understand the French fishermen’s frustration.

Re: Today's "What Gets My Goat" - Hugh Mungus - 29-08-18

Gotta agree VNA, our fleet shouldn't be there while the French have a self imposed ban to preserve stocks.
They'd soon be moaning if it were the other way round.

Re: Today's "What Gets My Goat" - mtread - 29-08-18

Agreed. Can you imagine the outrage here, if it was the other way round!

I thought the EU was all about sharing. We're sharing the scallops :lol

Very tasty they are too :b

.... but still nowhere near the UK

Re: Today's "What Gets My Goat" - celticdog - 29-08-18

Everyone's for preserving stocks but EU fishing laws are all a bit mental. So we can fish just outside the french waters when they're not allowed BUT, Spanish and Portuguese are free to fish in the Hebrides but UK boats are subject to quotas and can only fish for certain species. Have you ever been to Portugal, they love them little fish, they must use old ladies 60 denier tights as nets, no wonder they can't get the smell off the fish.

Re: Today's "What Gets My Goat" - mtread - 29-08-18

All a bit immaterial anyway. Once we leave the EU and the common fisheries policy, we won't be allowed to fish there ...

Re: Today's "What Gets My Goat" - steve 10562cc - 30-08-18

I used to live in south Devon  I've been fishing Slapton beach and there has been French and Spanish trawlers less than 200mtrs from  the beach ripping the bottom of the Skerris up with drag nets when they have run through the sea bed is completely destroyed for a couple of months. don't feel sorry for the EU  they buy up all the fish quoters  stopping the British fishermen earning a living. I think if look at commercial fishing in general, there's EU rules what boats can fish for and when but as a rule only the British skippers obey them. For those of us old enough to remember this smacks of the cod wars with Iceland. Only difference is we had a Royal navy with enough sea worthy ships to protect them.

Re: Today's "What Gets My Goat" - mtread - 30-08-18

Other difference is that Iceland were not, and are still not part of the EU. Once we leave it's going to be a 'free for all' with no rules, and no fish left anywhere.
