FZS 1000 2001 clutch problem - darren4993 - 27-02-19

Hi everyone just got myself a Fazer 1000 2001 with 35000 on the clock. I got it from bikes 4 all in Mulvern but when ever I'm in traffic the clutch fades to the point where it will stall and I will have to full adjust it to get any clutch. The bike is back with Bikes 4 all and they have put a new cable on it plus new clutch and its still happening was hopping that someone might have an idea what the problem is.

Thanks in advance Darren

Could it be the mechanism inside the clutch cover is damaged and bending when under pressure?

Re: FZS 1000 2001 clutch problem - celticbiker - 27-02-19

Had this on a tdm in London, turned out the cable is routed so it rests against the engine and was getting hot enough to allow it to stretch.
Stopped and routed it outside the frame and it cured the problem.

Another known issue with Gen 1 clutches is the blanking plug at the end of the mainshaft at the clutch end.  These sometimes fall out leading to oil pressure issues inside the clutch housing.  Might be worth a look if the cable doesn't prove to be the cause.

After market clutch cables are shite and stretch to buggery. Useless after a day.

Thanks for the replys it is at the shop where a got it from they have checked the bung in the clutch and thats fine they have put another cable on and thats made no difference plus put another clutch in and still the same. So they haven't got a clue what to do next and I'm left without a bike as I traded my old bike in.

Thanks Darren

I suggest asking the shop which cables they are fitting - the difference between Yamaha genuine cables and after market cables really is night and day - only believed once experienced. Genuine is expensive however, so it's a fair bet that your mechanic has fitted after market and still has problems....

My bike had much the same symptoms as you describe (but not as bad), an after market cable improved things very slightly, a genuine cable fixed things to perfection and has required no adjustment or maintenance for 6000 miles use so far.

I had a similar issue with cheap eBay clutch cables , two did fit , but couldn't get a decent lever at the handlebar however i adjusted it ,  one was totally wrong , sent them all back in turn got  a refund and brought genuine one and had no issues  since

Had a similar issue with a slinky glide on the tdm. It was like a rubber band.
Genuine cable for the win. Tdm one was 45 squid

Did you replace the clutch friction plates recently?

Re: FZS 1000 2001 clutch problem - Yanto - 18-08-22

No its a strange one i am tightening and slackening the cable all the time
I was doing a hill start the othere day then pulled the clutch it would not dissingage tightend the cable it was fine then 2 miles down the road clutch was slipping had to slacken the cable again

Re: FZS 1000 2001 clutch problem - unfazed - 20-08-22

On the FZS1000 it is usually due to a fraying cable, a badly routed cable or a non OEM cable

Re: FZS 1000 2001 clutch problem - Yanto - 21-08-22

First thing i replaced with oem

Re: FZS 1000 2001 clutch problem - unfazed - 22-08-22

Is the cable routed correctly?

Re: FZS 1000 2001 clutch problem - robbo - 22-08-22

I know oem parts are prohibitively expensive, and it's understandable to shop cheaper. However, cables, pads and oil filters are always genuine Yamaha for me.

Re: FZS 1000 2001 clutch problem - red98 - 22-08-22

having the same trouble, constantly adjusting the clutch and also quite stiff at times, tried a few cables over the years usually bought from wemoto, some are better than others but they all look identical.fitted new plates at the begining of the year as was having a bit of slipping when getting a move on. just ordered an OEM one from Fowlers...£57.01 about 3 times what i have been paying, will let you know how i get on.

Re: FZS 1000 2001 clutch problem - Yanto - 23-08-22

Its a worn clutch basket its shot just bought a low mileage engine will swap the basket and rebuild the newer engine raise compression etc

Re: FZS 1000 2001 clutch problem - red98 - 10-09-22

bit slow on this  :o ...i managed to order a 600 cable by mistake, Had to return and order one for the thou. camparing the new Yamaha cable with the patern old one there is not much difference, a very good copy. but, the lower half of the yam cable has a plastic sleeve on it, takes the inner cable diameter from 2mm too 2.5 mm. fitted this afternoon, 15mm job. and the clutch action is now smoother and lighter. test ride tomorrow will let you know how it goes...Also fitted a 4 degree advancer so should be a lot smoother pulling away now, looking forward to the test ride.  Wink
