Rear Master Cylinder - HJFazer - 06-06-16
Hi,
So I've been advised I need a new Rear Master Cylinder but I am really struggling to find any online.
There just seem to be rebuild kits which the garage advised wouldn't be a good idea.

Seems a bit steep at £125, but then I don't know how much one would usually cost

Just find an internet auction site and search for 'fzs 600 breaking', then message any sellers and ask them or make offers.

Yeah, I was thinking about that - any ideas how long they usually last in terms of mileage? My bike has done close to 60,000 so was looking at one that had done 27,000. i figure it should have a bit of life left in it.

Widen your search, The Fzs600 and Fzs1000 share the same Front and rear master cylinders
What is wrong with your one?

Is there an obvious way to determine if your master cylinder needs overhaul? Aside from brake feel not improving after bleeding, assuming seals and pistons etc are good?
The feel on my rear brake is poor - it will hold the bike on a hill when stopped, but the pedal is spongy like it needs a bleed - it's no good at slow speed filtering through traffic. I've tried cleaning and lubricating the lever pivot as seen on here before. Fluid was changed recently, and I've put braided lines on and recent EBC pads. Pedal is set the correct distance below the footpeg.
One piston is very slow to come out and squeezing it out and cleaning hasn't made any difference. I've bought new seals and am planning to overhaul the caliper - hopefully before MOT on Friday - along with new slide pins. When I've finished I'll try a bleed with pistons clamped right back and caliper suspended above the master cylinder, but if that doesn't solve it would you automatically move to Master Cylinder overhaul as the next step?

Squeezing the piston out and cleaning it from the outside is fine but only when you know it's all good on the inside.
My guess is once you've done a caliper overhaul it will all work fine again.
Just use a fair amount of Red Rubber grease on reassembly, then give the piston a spruce up with Brake Cleaner and a toothbrush once or twice a year, then more Red Rubber grease on the outer pistons and chances are it will behave itself in future.
Personally I've always avoided organic brake pads as well as the dust can cause most issues, I've been using ceramic pads on the rear to keep the dust down which definitely helps.
The alternative is to change it for an FZS 1000 rear caliper as a lot of people have done which requires less maintenance, but if you don't mind keeping yours in good shape with an occasional bit of TLC then it will work just fine.

The problem with under slung calipers is that the Bleed nipple is almost at the lowest point in the fluid circuit and air is inclined to stay at the highest.
Sometime it is best to remove the caliper to bleed it with the nipples higher and pistons pushed in full and clamped in place, not easy to do, but usually works.

Cheers for that, will see how it gets on after a refurb. I'm going to take the wheel off and brake torque arm out for a repaint anyway so lifting the caliper should be easy enough.

Dirt and corrosion behind the dust seal is often a big problem take as long as you can making sure the grooves are as clean as possible before starting to fit the new seals

Hi all, sorry for not replying, works been crazy.
So, an update... got the new master cylinder fitted, also a new bleed nipple replaced as that has been leaking.. bit of a pain but finally sorted, right?... no!?
So the nipple is still leaking and the pedal feels like it has a lot of movement. If the new nipple is leaking does this mean it needs a new calliper?
If so, one seen people recommend the fzs1000 calliper but they seem to be pretty rare. A new fzs600 calliper seems to be£300? but right now I'm tempted just to buy one and hopefully finally get this sorted. Any advice is as always gratefully received

Why not start in the "For Sale Or Wanted" section on here, i would imagine that of all the people that have upgraded to the 1000 caliper, there's gotta be someone who's still got their 600 one lying about doing nothing.
Just make sure you state you want one that's fully functioning.
Sod paying £300+ just for a rear caliper, that's obscene money.
This is another much cheaper option as well.

Temporary option - plumbers teflon tape round the nipple until you can get it sorted?
