Can't decide what to get next..! - positron - 23-02-16 My trust old FZS600 has over 100k miles and while it's still a great bike, it has had a rough past, and I am itching for a change. I have been trawling For Sale section here, and googling rest of the interwebs so much that Google is now throwing CAPTCHAs at me! :rolleyes My main use is to commute - 70 kms each way - half of it fast motorway and other half still mostly motorway but filtering / lane splitting. I have been reading up on NC750X/S (+frunk, +frugal, -fairing, -gutless?), FZ1S (+fun, -range, -mpg), FZS1000 (+great in everyway, -heavy, -ABS), VFR1200 (+quality, -cost, -issues), Tracer (+new, +great, -cost, -bars too wide for filtering) etc etc. I can't really make up my mind - I could spend up to 10k euro MAX - ideally 4-5k (that is £7000k max, but prefer to spend around 3-4k sterling as I rack up miles and bikes will melt away with road salt and grime in winter). I wondered what great wise foc-ers would recommend.. I realise that FZS1000 is a hot favorite here... Cheers! Re: Can't decide what to get next..! - slimwilly - 24-02-16 What about the 700cc yam, supposed to be good Re: Can't decide what to get next..! - Frosties - 24-02-16 Any good, loaded with extras and they are a cracking commuter. Handle similar to a Fazer 600. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HONDA-CBF1000-ABS-/201521919163?hash=item2eeba474bb:g:KZkAAOSwzgRWvOug Re: Can't decide what to get next..! - Robbie8666 - 24-02-16 well I gotta say my CBF1000 is a great bike but maybe too big/heavy for your requirements so what bout a CBF600? Re: Can't decide what to get next..! - Gnasher - 24-02-16 Z1000SX no competition. Bloody awesome bike I'm very tempted to part ex my ZX10R, which is mind blowing with almost 200bhp at the rear but in the real world the SX is far more usable and a better bet than the MT-10 and older FZ1 in my opinion. Kawasaki have done what Yamaha did when they introduced the FZR1000 only way better. You could also take a look at the Z800 which is way better than the MT-09/07 in my opinion. Sadly Yam have lost their way a little just look at what they've done to the XJR1300 :'( which is why I'm never selling mine. They're doing better than Suzuki which really are in dire need of some enthusiasm, Honda are doing what Honda have always done good bikes just a bit boring with some dog ugly models with the exception of the Blade. Ducati well as with all twins size matters so unless you want to spend a small fortune you wont get the power, MV again price, Aprilira odd styling shocking parts price and availability, KTM not convinced, BMW other than the S1000RR they just don't do it for me! Norton lovely but stuck in the past very expensive and not too cleaver on customer service, Triumph again not convinced and lets not forget Harley.....................no lets massively over priced, unreliable, shocking finish. That's my penith that got rid of 15 mins Re: Can't decide what to get next..! - nick crisp - 24-02-16 If I wanted a pure commuter with no thought required, just cheap, reliable transport, I'd consider any of the Hondas mentioned here. But if at any time I actually wanted to enjoy riding, have some fun, I'd steer well clear of CBFs, NCXs etc. But hey, I've never ridden any of them, so maybe I'm wrong. Think you've got it spot on......if it wasn't for the bars I'd be having a look at the Tracer. My CBF does all my 100 mile into/out of London commuting - literally can't fault it for total practicality. The Tiger I used to use has long been confined to a bit of old school riding experience (love the triple sound) and slow restoration. The Fazer is my back up commuter and weekend smiler. Suppose it all depends on how Positron uses the bike aside from work. Re: Can't decide what to get next..! - lew600fazer - 24-02-16 I have had two FZ6's S1 & S2, also had a CBF 1000 GT Mk1, also the Z1000SX 2011 model also the FZ1 2009 model. I am now running a 2013 MT-09. If you are looking at a decent commuter bike but still want a bit of fun at the weekend and your budget is running to about £4/5k have a look for the Mk2 Honda CBF. They are nothing fancy, bit boring to look at but a well put together bike. The Mk1 CBF is also a great bike but they do have a problem with the Stators going into melt down. If you really want fun go for the Gen 2 FZ1, the Gen 1 is getting long in the teeth now, but still a great bike. The Z1000SX is a great bike as well but does nothing that the FZ1 cannot do, also the Z1000SX & Kawasaki's build quality leave a lot to be desired, from an engineering point of view they are bullet proof but like all kwackers if you do not hit it with ACF 50 during the winter months it will show it's age in no time. The Z800 is a bike that Kawasaki cannot give away, it weighs a ton and concerning rider comfort you will have to get an up market seat as you will also have to do with the Z1000SX stock seats are like a brick. The Z1000SX is also prone to falling off the side stand, check out www.z1000sx.co.uk. Me I just love my MT-09 although I think the build quality is certainly not as good as other Yamahas have been in the past. Re: Can't decide what to get next..! - positron - 24-02-16 Thanks for the thoughts so far..! Apart from commuting, I might have two or three weekend trips a year with pillion. That's about it really. No plans for any serious Europe road trips yet (we have very young kids). I know of CBF600 and CBF1000.. they great bikes, looks as practical as FZS600 and 1000 but.. less exciting than Fazers. I hadn't looked into Z1000SX and after spending an extended lunch hour reading reviews, it looked great but I did suspect Kawazakis have a bit of bad rep about their build quality, especially compared to Honda & Yamaha. Z1000SX looks amazing though - I didn't realise the riding position is so similar to Fazer, you couldn't tell by its' super-sporty looks. I got slightly excited when I read Yamaha is working on a MT-07 based Tracer.. but then I read it has been pushed out to 2017. I love the look of tracer, but the bars are definitely too wide for filtering and lane splitting. Reflecting on good build quality comments about Honda, I am still thinking may be the NC750S (not X - S is more Fazer like in I think, at least in my head.. and the frunk will be ideal for work laptop). And hold onto Fazer 600 as well. Anyone here know how NC750S compares to FZS600? I would have loved if there's a decent electric bike with enough range and power to cover my commute - but shame, there's no such thing yet. Thanks again! Re: Can't decide what to get next..! - Val - 24-02-16 I have to say the only bike that can eventually replace my Foxeye would be BMW S1000XR. So you either get same FSZ 600 with low mileage or go for XR ![]() Anything in between is not worth it IMO. It is either heavy or not sharp handling for comute or both :eek Re: Can't decide what to get next..! - nick crisp - 24-02-16 (24-02-16, 03:31 PM)positron link Wrote: Apart from commuting, I might have two or three weekend trips a year with pillion. You don't need a fun bike cos you've still got the Fazer. The NC doesn't compare to the Fazer. They're chalk and cheese. Great, that's what you need. In fact, one wonders if you need the Fazer at all right now. Get a Honda. It's the motorcycle version of a car. Fire and forget. Re: Can't decide what to get next..! - Skippernick - 24-02-16 Why all these complaints about the Tracer's bars. They have these funny things called shops that will sell different types of bar that will suit any need!! Re: Can't decide what to get next..! - lew600fazer - 24-02-16 The 750 Honda jazz engined bike has two things going for it , the dummy tank for storage space and fuel economy. Oh also you will likely be able to have a doze on the Honda while doing your commute, it will bore you to death so likely as not you can have a kip. Re: Can't decide what to get next..! - Oldgit - 27-02-16 What about a Bus. Re: Can't decide what to get next..! - hotmetal - 27-02-16 What about a street triple? I chopped a gen 1 Fazer Thou in for a Streety a few years ago because it's much easier to filter through London on. It's also an absolute blast in the twisties. Downsides are that thieves love them almost as much as owners, and they're a bit thirsty compared to a gen 1. Maybe 38mpg rather than 45 and the light will come on at about 120 miles if in London traffic. The underseat pipes reduce the amount of stuff you can get under the seat and if you want panniers they'll need to be hard ones. But they're good in traffic and a lot of fun. I've only had 3 proper rides on mine so far, but enough to realise that a Striple would be wasted on commuting and motorways. It's the most fun toy I've played with in years...ooh-er missus! Re: Can't decide what to get next..! - hotmetal - 27-02-16 Yes it is wasted on motorways but you gotta get to work to earn your petrol money! I bought mine with the idea of it being a commuter bike for filtering and keeping my trusty Thou as my main steed. I think I rode the Thou about 5 times in the year following the purchase of the Streety as it was so much more fun, although not as good for going to the German Fazer forum bash, but for me that was once every 2-3 years. Re: Can't decide what to get next..! - Frosties - 27-02-16 Right then, all sorted by the looks of it - the required bike based on all the info is.................................... this > > > > > > > > > > The MV Agusta Brutale :lol Re: Can't decide what to get next..! - celticdog - 27-02-16 That blue seat might slow you down a bit Frosties . . . Re: Can't decide what to get next..! - positron - 27-02-16 Thanks for all the suggestions - lol @ Bus. Work location is awkward for public transport but doable. Which got me thinking, I also have the option to car pool (guy in my team lives two cul-de-sacs away and drives in every day). But I still bike. And when I think why, it's because I enjoy it. I enjoy the rapid acceleration, sense of speed and agility... Hmm.. so perhaps NC750 isn't the right bike. I am not a mindless commuter zombie... not yet anyway. FZS1000, FZ1, CBF1000F, BMW F800 ST, VFR 800F or 1200F are all back on picture now. And Fazer 8 even. I don't think naked bikes would work on the motorway - and NC is very naked - another negative about it. The only plus on NC is the frunk and that can be achieved on any bike with y a decent tank or tail-bag. Okay, search is on! Sterling slightly down against Euro, and that might be bad news for most of yous, but it's absolute music to my ears! ![]() ![]() |
