Camchain replacement - MissB - 06-02-16
Does anyone know who would replace a camchain on a 2002 Fazer for me?
I live in Wolverhampton....any ideas on costs please?

Are you sure it needs replacing, it can take many months before it clicks if you don't ride the bike hard?

I think it took around 7 or 8 months last time before mine clicked to the next notch, driving me bonkers beforehand.
The silence was deafening when it happened idling outside my work!
I actually thought something had gone wrong! :lol

As said these can get pretty noisy before the tensioner moves onto the next notch. How many miles has your engine done? who has "diagnosed" cam chain problem?

Just over 62k....and the problem was diagnosed by my mechanic.
She can't do the job as she hasn't the equipment and equally doesn't know anyone that would do the job.

There is a little something which may help the tensioner click another notch - doesn't work on all but worth a shot.
Sit on bike with ignition off, select 2nd gear, pull and hold clutch in then paddle backwards as fast as you can before letting go of the clutch sharply. It may click up a notch. Then back to neutral, start it and see.

Can you not unscrew the central nut on the tensioner, remove the spring and ball bearing, and push a screwdriver in the hole to 'force' it along a click?
It risks 'over tensioning' but if that's what you are trying to do by other methods, this would surely be easier.
If you can get a chain with a removable link, you can cut the old chain and use it to feed through the new chain. Although it would be a right faff, removing all the chain guides and then having to redo the timing after. A right mission with the engine in situ, easier with the engine out.

My cam chain stared rattling somewhere between 50,000 and 60,000 miles.
Never got round to doing anything about it.
Bikes now done 82,000 and it's still rattling of course, but it hasn't failed.
As regards cost, it depends on whether you fit an endless chain (very expensive), or a soft link one (much cheaper).
If memory serves I think I was quoted around £500 for an endless one because the engines got to come out, and £150 for a soft link one, (both prices were for labour only and were ex v.a.t.) but that was ages ago.

I have done plenty of FZS cam chains although I personally would never fit a split chain and always go for the continuous chain. If supplied with the engine out the job is around 250, if I have to take the engine out and put it back in its around 350.

I thought top end would be about £500, which I am happy to pay.
The fazer has been with me from new and actually very attached to it.
For that amount I wouldn't be able to pick up a bike where I know the history.
I did 99.9% of the mileage on this one...

Oh and I have managed to get some telephone numbers for mechanics that potentially can do the job so will do some ringing round next week

At 62K it is most likely a worn cam chain with the tensioner at the end of its adjustment and as stated previously the Split link chain option is the cheapest way.
I replaced min a 50K with a DID split link version and is still good with 45K on it

Probably not but her bike will get done properly, how many times have you and do you hear of people having to waste a day waiting for bikes or cars just to get the oil changed???
