NEAR MISS THREAD - dazza - 19-07-15
Hello Foccer's,
Thought it might be an idea to start a new "Near miss" thread.
Something for us all to take heed of and bear in mind when we're out riding, also an outlet to vent any frustration at the way people seem to want to kill you or even beat yourself up over a silly mistake that could have been more serious.
I'll start it off....
Been a funny old weekend for me, firstly, two boy racers made intentional dangerous manoeuvres towards me. One when I was parked up, then his companion following him who swerved out when I went for the overtake. None of the manoeuvres were life threatening, just bravado I believe.
Then today, whilst hitting my favourite local bends which are fast, wide and sweeping I saw a car in the middle of the road facing me wanting to turn right. Two other cars at the turning waiting to come out.
I always adjust my speed and cover my brakes when I encounter this sort of scenario but this time my sixth sense told me she was going to pull across my path.
Sure enough, she pulled across me, her attention concentrated on the cars waiting to pull out....I was already on the brakes and banging down the box when her husband visibly screamed at her and she stopped midway.
I could see everyone's face wincing as I came to a stop 2 metres from the passenger door.
They was apologetic and embarrassed while the other car drivers were shaking their heads.
It's funny as I was emotionless and totally unsurprised as I was expecting it.
What I want to take from this, if I hadn't adjusted my speed and expected it to happen, I doubt I could have stopped in time and seeing as she stopped mid manoeuvre, taking evasive action behind her might have ended in tears.
Stay safe out there Foccers, people predictably do unpredictable things.

BMW cars.......just avoid the foccers like the plague. They are predictably unpredictable.
I could probably give you 6 stories a day to and from work and most would involve them.

Well done Dazza, always best to err on the side of caution when out on the road.
I always take the attitude that everyone is out to kill me and try to leave myself plenty of escape options

every day I get a twat in lane 1 of a roundabout who ends up turning right, I just get a 6th sense for it now so I'll hang back in lane 2 until they've crossed my path then give them the bull horn :lol
what really gripped my shit the other day was a woman in a cage pulling out of a side alley way from the rear of some shops, which disects a big pavement and onto a main road. I was walking the dog who was slightly ahead of me and rather than erring on extreme caution as you would when driving down an alley, she came out about 15mph.......don't sound much but it was far too fast for the scenario.....the dog shit himself and jumped back, I thought.....you foccing tw*t you nearly killed my dog (could easily have been a kid running ahead or on a scooter etc)
Was just about to bollock her when she took off onto the main road and disappeared.......I was furious and probably a good job she never stopped to hear my fury

If only I could've taken a photo this morning on the way to work.
2 BMW's, both black in colour, side by side right in front of me, and both pulled up waiting right on top of giant painted words on the road saying "KEEP CLEAR".

At least once a month i perform a practice emergency stop, hoping i will never have to do it for real.
Well on friday afternoon on the way home through a couple of mild twisties in a 50 doing about 50+ on a right hander no more than 50 meters ahead theres a fooking tractor and trailer entering the road from a blind entrance on the right. I know its there but for a couple of years I've not seen it being used so have been lolled into a false sense of security, thank f*ck i practice my emergency stops because i didn't have time to think i just did. Amazingly it was text book no skids stopped 10 meters from the large green thing and even remembered to check mirrors for other vehicles.
Took 30 seconds to restore my breathing to a clamer level.

Had a near miss today when a tractor pulled out in front of us, one of those crop spraying ones with the arms folded in, now he either didn't look or thought f**k 'em, I was number 3 of 5 and it was close god only knows how the first two stopped. How can someone not see 5 headlights and 5 bikes?

There was a truck with a large keep right sign on the back of it in front of me up ahead, so in static traffic at lights I indicated and moved between two cars on my right side.
The driver behind me loudly honked the horn at me, so a bit bemused I looked around and a woman was waving her left hand at me while her right hand had her phone to her ear!
When we got moving she decided to literally sit about 3 feet from the back of my bike for about a quarter of a mile then quite aggressively weaved in and out behind me around a roundabout!!!
Luckily I kept my cool and also kept my speed the same so the arrogant twat wouldn't speed up then forget to brake through sheer anger. And fortunately my years of road experience paid dividends.
But I would just like to say..........what a complete and utter cnut she was.

Yesterday I watched a merc driver approach the T junction on the left ahead of me. I thought, he hasn't looked. Sure enough he pulled straight out in front of me.
When I stopped about a foot from his door and told him to FOCCIN USE HIS EYES his first reaction was to tell me to slow down!!!!
I thought well it won't make much difference if you dont look.
BTW this was in Tesco's car park and I was doing maybe 15 mph.

Should have sorry instead of accusing you of going fast.
However I know why he has said you are going fast. Because he misjudged your speed. It was looking to him as you were going with say 5 miles. He was wrong and that make him angry to you. Obviously you are angry to him.

IMO the reason why bikers do less SMIDSY on the side of the sorry guy is at least for me, not that I am better than most of the car drivers, the reason is from my experience intuitively when I see the bike coming with priority just stop without trying to judge the speed.
