slight oil leak - Paulfzs - 12-04-15

was under my fazer today having a lube up of the chain and centre stand when i felt burning oil drip onto my hand, its only a small drip every minute or so and appears to be coming from the sprocket cover.

so clutch rod or gear selector shaft...

whats it more likely to be?
i was thinking maybe clutch shaft has dirt in it or something?

Re: slight oil leak - rhinoeli - 12-04-15

Chain lube maybe?  :b

was black and dripping from the engine and very hot!

Re: slight oil leak - fazersharp - 12-04-15

I would of thought that it does get hot in there and mixed with all that crap inthere it is black, mine was when I took the cover off to clean, if you give it a good clean out in there it may go away, mine have a gunk tunnel of solid grease that the chain went through.
Have a look here http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,10769.0.html this chap had a chain snap and it snapped his push rod and gouged out the seal and yet no drips

Re: slight oil leak - anutz - 12-04-15

look at my pics here - my sprocket cover was a mess, so it may well be from there as fazersharp commented....

http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,16313.0.html

cannot think where else it would be from but i am no expert ( yet...)

i however had  not seen any drips on my floor or noticed any dripping after riding and parking in the garage

Re: slight oil leak - Paulfzs - 12-04-15

suppose i should go take my cover off and see whats going on.

mention of a ball bearing behind the push rod, can i pull the push rod out and leave the ball bearing in there?

will pull my shaft and have a look.

Re: slight oil leak - anutz - 12-04-15

never pulled the shaft out much but someone on here recently was talking about pulling the push rod out and if it could cause any issues.....i will try find it - i don't think it did as they had pictures of it once they cleaned it up....and it was fully removed....

Re: slight oil leak - anutz - 12-04-15

?

Did you put a new Sprocket Cover Gasket on....i did not.....and its been fine....

Re: slight oil leak - fazersharp - 12-04-15

Yes I did as I got it cheep from ebay --- well if you can call £5 for a piece of paper or whatever cheep,as you can see from the black remnants in the pic they tend to weld themselves on, so I lightly greased both sides of the gasket to stop it sticking for the next time i took the cover off
But the general consensus is that you do not need the gasket but you may have to alter the clutch slightly to compensate for it no longer being there

Edit ---------- maybe Paulfzs has found a reason why you do need the gasket - maybe he has not got one

Re: slight oil leak - anutz - 12-04-15

i don't have one..... :eek

mine was toast - i just re-assembled and thought i will watch it.....

seems to have been fine and clutch behavior is OK for now..well the engines in bits as we know so it was ok

Re: slight oil leak - Paulfzs - 12-04-15

took cover off, slight oil in/around one of the metal things (forgot name) that make the cover line up with the rest of the engine...

no gasket but its never had a gasket since the engine change over 1300 miles ago and never leaked.

cleaned it all up gave it a blast off with a hose so now ill wait and see, i might have to jetwash the crud out so i can get a better view though.

gear lever shaft and clutch shaft aren't leaking oil, cant see it leaking from the final drive.

i had a few drips the other day after id been riding at high rpm so could be a mixture of thin oil that needs changing and a lot of pressure

i did however find 1 downpipe is a little lose so needs tightening and 1 of my rubbers is split through.. joy!
