Fazer oil change - St.eve - 20-05-14
Hi Guys
Gonna do my first oil and Filter change this weekend just wondering which is the best oil to use I am thinking Yamalube unless you guys have any better ideas.

Long as its bike specific n personally 10w40 semi synth then alls good.. Not sure of the price Yamalube oils, but plenty quality stuff out there for less money I would imagine..

So long as it's 10w40 semi synthetic and specifically for motorbikes (very important) then the size of your wallet makes the choice,
Personally I'm happy with the Halford's oil!
Just remember to replace the drain plug washer with a new one!

As above. I've always used Motul 5000 as it's what my dealer used when they did it.

What happens if you use 10w40 car oil? probably like tipping chip fat oil in your engine I spose? Just asking... I've got Halford s 10w40 motorbike in mine.

It's quite simple though- stick to the recommended grade/ type oil quoted in handbook/ Haynes manual.

+1 for the Halfords 10w40 semi. Used it for years with no issues on both cars & bikes........it's one of those "you pays your money".

Note on the Halford's oil-
You look at it and think 'its only £2 cheaper'
but it's 5 litres whereas the branded oils come in 4 litre tubs!

JASO MA2 oil should be good for the clutch. If it slips with a MA2 oil, then it's not the oil - it's the clutch.

I used Halfords part-synthetic a few years ago but it was the only oil I have experienced clutch slip with. Fine once it had warmed up but normal acceleration could get it to slip for the frist mile or so.
All motorcycle oils on sale now far exceed the SE spec quoted for the bike, and any JASO MA, MA1 or MA2 oil should be ok for the clutch.

I also used halfords semi on my last oil change, can't fault it, theres alot of people saying this brand is the best and so on, however regular oil and filter changes at the right intervals is the best method, theres no need to purchase super expensive "racing" oil

I read a story in a bike magazine some years ago about a bloke who lived in Reading and was a courier. An easy day for him was a thousand miles. He put 440,000 miles on a VFR before it was written off, he had another with over 200,000 miles before that was written off too (as i remember) His bike at the time of the story was a Blackbird showing 220,000 miles and still going strong.
He changed the oil on his bike every week with the cheapest CAR oil he could find - usually from the supermarket. Go figure.
I've used Vauxhall semi-synth in my old CBR Thou for the last maybe 20k miles (cos i get it dirt cheap) with no ill effects, but there's still that little niggling doubt telling me not to use it in my Blackbird, so for that I use Halfords semi-synth and use my trade card for a nice bit of discount
As a funny footnote, that courier went to a Yam dealer and bought a brand new FJ1200. He took it back the next day complaing that it was too vibey. The dealer told him to try it for another week or two and if he didn't like it they'd give him a full refund. He returned the bike 2 weeks later for his refund, and the salesman nearly choked when he saw that it had done 14,000 miles :lol

1983 Kawasaki GT550 - 15,000 miles
1984 Kawasaki GT750 - 184,000 - "Worst bike I ever bought"
1986 Yamaha FJ1100 - 30,000
1987 Yamaha FJ1200 - 14,000 in 3 weeks - returned to the dealer due to excessive vibration
1987 Yamaha FJ1200 - 90,000
1988 Honda VFR750 FJ - 140,000
1989 Honda VFR750 FK - 149,000 - knocked over at an airport, then traded in
1990 Honda VFR750 FL - 852,000 - engine replaced at 440,000 after it blew its head gasket
1996 Kawasaki ZZR1100 C3 - 252,000
1997 Kawasaki ZZR1100 D1 - 60,000 - written off
1998 Honda Blackbird - 410,000
2001 Honda Blackbird - 205,000 - current bike at the time of the article
Some other info:
Oil and filter changed every week - using Honda oil filters but 10w40 car oil - the cheap stuff (that's what he used in the 852,000 mile VFR!!)
RK chains last far longer than any others - usually 80,000 miles
A Scottoiler is used to keep the chain 'saturated in oil'"

I almost always use car oil and have had absolutely no problems.
Always 10w40 semi synthetic changed every 4k miles.
Currently using Halfords brand. More often I use Castrol GTX.

always use genuine Yamaha yamalube and genuine filters in mine.
did 50k in one year on the cat, no burnt oil, 9k changes and use the same stuff on the fazer, with 3k changes as the journeys are shorter.
