Winter Project - adeejaysdelight - 18-12-13

Hi Guys,

I bought this yesterday as a wee project to work on over those long winter nights. It has 21,000 miles, some decent mods (braided hoses, tail tidy, K & N filter) and some no so decent (stickers, shitty mini indicators).

My plan is to do all of the work myself as nothing to technical is required. It needs a new sprocket cover, a full service, fluid change, callipers cleaned up and a deep valet.

It is going to be more labour intensive than anything, but it keeps me busy  Big Grin

Re: Winter Project - HarryHornby - 18-12-13

I'm seriously considering a Thundercat, I think I looked at this one, where did you get it?

Re: Winter Project - noggythenog - 18-12-13

Nice on adee

Always liked thundercats, in hindsight it would have suited me more than a fzer.

Not many thundercats left either.

I do remember they have a weakness in the gearbox but cant remember the details, it was discussed on here in the last year.

Maybe punkstig's your man in the know as he had a couple & used as courier.

But he set fire to his one! :evil

Re: Winter Project - adeejaysdelight - 18-12-13

Harry, I got it in Scotland, West coast.

Nogg, the problem gearbox is 3rd and 4th gear as far as I have read. This one is sound. No clunks, slippage or drive problems at all. Mechanically it is sound, it just needs a bit of TLC.

When I bought my Fazer it was a bit of a dog. Now it is near mint. I won't be spending 2 years doing this one up though. A couple of month of elbow grease and I should be set for spring.

Re: Winter Project - wezdavo - 18-12-13

That's a Thunderace not a Thundercat isn't it

Re: Winter Project - slimwilly - 18-12-13

Ace being the 1000cc, Cat is 600cc,,,so with Exup sticker on the side and the 1000 uses an exup.it may be.Unless someone bought a sticker Smile

Re: Winter Project - wezdavo - 18-12-13

Re: Winter Project - adeejaysdelight - 18-12-13

Looks stunning mate

Enjoy your nights in the man cave where we all like to dwell when not out and about on our steeds.

Re: Winter Project - nick crisp - 18-12-13

An excellent choice Adee.

I rather think these are like the gen 1 thou in that they were not really appreciated as much as they deserved when they came out, as other bikes kind of eclipsed them. But I think people have really realised since how good they are. The value of well kept ones is likely to increase over further time I think, much like the FZR1000 from which they came.

Re: Winter Project - Punkstig - 15-02-14

It may be a cheap project but if you're keeping it I'd recommend spending some money on the suspension, they're heavy girls as is, not forgetting how old she's getting.
Personally I wouldn't even think of reconditioning what's on there.

Re: Winter Project - adeejaysdelight - 23-02-14

I have managed a bit more work on the old girl over the last week or so. She is almost there and I am on the home straight  :thumbup

I got the carbs balanced, which was a breeze due to the forward thinking of those ingenious Yamaha engineers.

Here is a before and after picture for comparison.

Re: Winter Project - adeejaysdelight - 28-03-14

The Ace passed it's MoT today with no worries at all. A bulb blew on route, but that was easily rectified. I just have to give her a full valet now and she is ready for sale.

Re: Winter Project - bigbluebear - 28-03-14

Well done...I saw this bike before any work was done.....looking forward to see some pics of it finished

Thanks big yin. I will get up some fresh pictures once its had a valet. Should be Tuesday.

Re: Winter Project - adeejaysdelight - 02-04-14

Finally got the Thunderace finished.

All the work on the list is complete and she is running well.

Everything is checked, cleaned or replaced and torqued up as it should be.

Fresh MoT and service and ready for someone to enjoy this beast over the summer.

Wish it was me...
