Speedo Drive Sensor - Dead Eye - 10-08-12
Hi all, unfortunately my reliable Fazer has decided to no longer show me my speed. I tried looking through all the wiring and couldn't find anything wrong and all the cables are corrosion free, in the end its ended up at my local garage. They've gone through and found it needs a new Speedo Drive Sensor thingum which is quoted at £93 :'(
Obviously they suggested looking elsewhere to see if I could get hold of a second hand replacement so my question is has anyone had to try and find one and how much did it end up costing you?
Typically at the same time, my car has packed up (rear brake pipe exploded) so I have no transportation. I plan on trying to go to a breakers to see if they have anything and the usual fleabay searches but it seems to be quite a rare part. I don't suppose anyone here has one they wouldn't mind me purchasing?

Crikey, is it not just the part that goes into the wheel with the 2 lugs that is broken?
Have you, or anyone, had the wheel off recently? The lugs break easily if not lined up correctly.
Take the front wheel off and look at the inside of the sensor, it'll be obvious if the lugs are broken. If they're not, line them up properly and have a ride to test it again, you may have just jammed them in the wrong position and got away with breaking them?

Should be only the rotor you would need to replace. And that should not cost you 93 notes...

People have glued them back together in the past with araldite.

I am one of the Araldite glue fraternity - but my repair lasted about 7 miles....
So I bought a new rotor.

I'd certainly check the rotor hasn't broken, that's cheaper to replace than the sensor.
Having said that, the sensors can fail... mine did it at about 50k, seem to recall it was about £60 for a new one, but that was 9 years ago so £93 today doesn't sound unlikely.

I had the front wheel off myself to check it out and the lugs were fine and there was no evidence of damage at all, prior to that the wheel had only been off when it had new tyres which was 8 months ago - the problem showed only a couple of weeks ago. This is why it ended up at the garage and they still have it at the moment. The garage is a local place, they guys there are pretty cool and told me outright he thought the part was extortionate and to try to find a second hand one / cheaper one if possible - they probably get their supplies from Fowlers as I am from / in Bristol (for another two months only).
John: I actually tried going to The Bike Hut today but they were closed (arrived at like 2pm) so I guess I'll have to try Monday and a bit earlier as I doubt they will be open over the weekend.
Well, I believe I was told it was the sensor, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to double check with them to see if its only the rotor that needs replacing.
On brighter news, the car is almost going again (being 24 years old, most of the nuts have issues with being removed so its taken 3 days to get the damned old brake pipe off)

According to their website they were closed today and will reopen Tuesday 14th.
Normal opening times are MON-FRI 9am-5.30pm Closed SAT/SUN.

Right, a quick update. Took the diagram from the above web address to the garage and they confirmed that although Part 15 is missing one lug and ideally should be replaced, that it is in fact part 14 that is at fault and needs replacing. Although the guy suggested that part 14 usually comes with part 15 as a set (but you can buy part 15 separately if necessary)
Time to go hunting I guess...

Go to your local Yam dealer, get part 15 - thats almost certainly the issue, its a known weakness on the 600, we've heard of numerous cases (on here) of shops trying to oversell on this one. Its a cheap part (less than a tenner, if memory serves), and if it doesn't fix the issue, then you've lost nothing, as its broken anyway...

If it's missing a lug, then it's broken isn't it? It's been put back wrongly and had pressure in all the wrong places put on it.
I agree with with 'richfzs', i'd get a new rotor first, but in the meantime do a free UK Breakers yard search online, and see what's about.

Would a yam dealer really be that much cheaper? The spare parts site linked from darrsi shows it as £126!
Fowlers appears to be the only local dealer to me in any case - everyone else is 40+ miles out at least. As far as breakers go, the largest is closed until Tuesday and the only other one that is listed I can't contact because their phone number doesn't exist anymore, which isn't particularly promising. May get round to driving out to where they are (its not exactly close) to see, but its going to have to wait until after the weekend.

Its part 15 you should be buying first, and that's listed as 19.28.
Mayhap prices have gone up, but even so, the one you have is cream crackered, so buy that and test first, before splashing out on the 129 (or whatever you find it in breakers for).

Part 15 has already been replaced with a known working replacement to rule it out, so a new one isn't necessary, but preferred since one lug is missing from mine
