Gen 1 grab rail - 1967fazer - 03-05-12

Not sure if this has come up before, but, I recently took a lady friend pillion on a run. She had not been out on a bike for a long time but thoroughly enjoyed the ride out. Her only complaint was the horrible side grab rails on the 1000, I too found it difficult and uncomfortable as she tended to allow too much weight on me when braking.  Does anyone know of an alternative grabrail, one that loops over the back, to the crappy original ones. I don't really want to spend the vast fortune that Rentec are asking for their grabrails/sports racks!  Any ideas?

Re: Gen 1 grab rail - PieEater - 03-05-12

Check ebay for "motorcycle love handles" all my pillions much prefer these to the rails on the bike, can be kept in the spare helmet and don't need any mods to the bike.

Re: Gen 1 grab rail - theboydougie - 03-05-12

yeah, the "love handles" that strap around the riders waist might be the way forward..

Re: Gen 1 grab rail - 1967fazer - 05-05-12

Hmmm my brother got some of those for his missus to try, but sadly she can no longer go pillion due to ill health. Might try blag them and give them a try, tho one question springs to mind, do they help stop the pillion from transfering all their weight on to the rider whilst braking?

Re: Gen 1 grab rail - ghostbiker - 05-05-12

Most of that transfered weight will stop once the pilion can relax and gets used to being on tha back. Love handles do seem to work well for nervous pilions. I prefer my topbox most ppl don't even bother to hold on now. And a smooth ride helps them stop head butting me.

Re: Gen 1 grab rail - 1967fazer - 05-05-12

Will have to try the "love handles" option, absolutely no plans to put a topbox on my bike, thanks chaps Smile

Re: Gen 1 grab rail - 1967fazer - 07-05-12

Very tidy that, wouldn't want a back rest, just a grab rail. How much would it cost?

Re: Gen 1 grab rail - kebab19 - 08-05-12

Renntec do a grab rail. Ker-chinnng ££££££

http://www.motorbikesandparts.co.uk/renntec-grab-railcissy-bar-yamaha-fzs1000-fazer-black-p-19663.html

They also do one as part of a rack. Even more £££££££ but more practical:

Re: Gen 1 grab rail - violetsdaddy - 08-05-12

Bruddy hell that's just too much money for a bit of bent tube.
If johnakay can do a heap of them for us at a bit of a reduction would anyone else be interested?
I for one would be....

I wouldn't dare!
Way out of my skill zone.
But, what would you charge for one??

Re: Gen 1 grab rail - 1967fazer - 09-05-12

Looked at Renntec, I'm sure their products are very well made etc. But, they're charging waaaay too much money for them! So what I and obviously others need is some enterprising, young soul to whip up a few of these "bits of bent tube", charge a reasonable price, make themselves a tidy profit and make everyone happy:-)

Yep, that's where I'm coming from

Re: Gen 1 grab rail - johnakay - 11-05-12

just checked in renntec site.
look like they don't do grab rails any more.
if one of you guys can lend me a grab rail I'll see what I can do.
probably do one for around £45 plus p&p and signed for.
or if any of you live in teesside then maybe you could pop around.

Re: Gen 1 grab rail - bludclot - 11-05-12

that kind of money sounds like a bargain!

would you be interested in making a taller backrest that would bolt to my givi rack plate holder? i've been meaning to spec one out and have it made locally for some time, ultimate comfort for the long haired general.

Re: Gen 1 grab rail - pitternator - 14-05-12

to put costs of " bent tube" into perspective...I have the ventura system on my gen1 which has a luggage rack with tall hoopfixed onto side rails( which are bolted to the bike) , it can be swapped over with  a grab rail. The side  rails cost £97, the packrack about £60 odd, and the grab rail £20.So its expensive just to use as a grabrail, but cheap option if you use it for luggage carrying like I do.
Think of what you earn per hour at work, factor in R & D time to get the  right fit for a piece of bent tube, then make more, then paint them, then post them...FFS anything under £50 is really a bargain in my book...

Re: Gen 1 grab rail - 1967fazer - 15-05-12

£45 sounds good, however, after giving the bike a check over the day, I found the I'm gonna need new pads all round very soon, so the grab rail will have to wait and the lady friend I mentioned in the beginning will have to hang on harder for a while longer! Wink
But when I have some spare cash, I will be back in touch Smile
